Wellesley, MA --- Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) scored a pair of goals, including the 40th of her collegiate career, and added two assists as WPI opened its 2019 NEWMAC field hockey slate with a 5-2 win at Wellesley Saturday.
The Engineers remain unbeaten at 7-0 while the Blue move to 4-3 on the season.
O'Sullivan was credited for the helper on Bridget Sullivan's (Wilmington, MA) goal 7:32 into the game. Maggie King (Philadelphia, PA) then teamed with Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI) to even the game back up at 10:12. The lone second period marker belonged to Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) at 19:33.
Once again O'Sullivan began the second half with a quick goal, this time 22 seconds in with help from Angie Ferro (Northboro, MA). Carly Cidado (Easton, MA) and O'Sullivan followed at 33:51 to make it 4-1 Engineers. Amy Kate Williams (Greenville, SC) and Dennis connected to get the hosts within two at 38:55. O'Sullivan and Lindsey Giorgi (Barre, MA) finished off a penalty corner for what would be the 5-2 final at 41:09.
Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) made a game-best five saves while Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, PA) stopped four for Wellesley.
While WPI took 12 of 21 shots, the hosts were awarded 12 of 15 penalty corners.
The Engineers will be on Rooftop Field for a 4:30 meeting with Lasell on Tuesday and the Blue host perennial power Bowdoin at 5pm.
