WORCESTER – A Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) goal with 6:13 left in regulation separated WPI and visiting Springfield in a 1-0 NEWMAC field hockey match played Saturday morning on Rooftop Field as part of Homecoming Weekend.
The Engineers (10-0) are one of seven teams in Division III without a loss, including No. 6 Vassar (9-0) who plays later today. Also sitting at 10-0 is defending national champion No. 1 Middlebury, No. 2 TCNJ, No. 15 Centre, and St. Mary's (MD). Widener, meanwhile, leads the pack in terms of games played at 11-0. No. RV Stockton was 10-0 before falling 3-0 to No. 18 Kean Saturday afternoon.
It was also the Boynton Hillers second victory over the Pride (6-5, 0-3 NEWMAC) in three seasons.
Sullivan knocked home her own rebound to put the Engineers on the scoreboard with her sixth of the season and 19th of her career. The play started with Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) dribbling the ball down the left side into the circle. He shot was redirected by Lauren Dishong (Milford, MA) and then ended up on the stick of Sullivan, whose second shot proved to be the game winner.
Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) stopped four shots for WPI as Elizabeth Morehouse (North Attleboro, MA) turned away five for Springfield.
Of WPI's 10 shots half were taken by Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) who also accounted for a quartet of the team's six shots on-goal.
The Pride's primary shooter was Grace Levansavich (Auburn, MA) with four of the seven shots and three of the four shots on-target.
WPI is off for exams this week and returns to action Saturday with a trip to Wheaton for a noon start. Springfield is also on the road Saturday with a 1pm appointment at Smith.
