Field Hockey Knocked from Ranks of Unbeatens by MIT in Key NEWMAC Match

WORCESTER – Amanda Garofalo (Fairfield, NJ) notched a pair of goals as visiting MIT handed the WPI field hockey team its first loss of the 2019 season with a 3-2 triumph in a Saturday afternoon NEWMAC matchup in Alumni Stadium.

With the win, Cambridge's Engineers improve to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play while the Crimson and Gray are now 13-1 and 3-1.

Devon Goetz (Rockville, MD) got MIT on the board first with a shot from the top of the circle at 7:12. Garofalo followed with her first of the game at 12:59.

WPI cut the deficit in half with a laser by Shannon Hynes (Auburn, MA) with help from Angie Ferro (Northboro, MA) at 27:54. The Engineers then evened it up as Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) buried her own rebound at 33:18.

Garafalo then netted the final go-ahead goal at 41:28 for MIT, who held a slim 12-11 edge in shots and doubled up WPI in penalty corners (10-5). In a statistical oddity, shots on-goal were 9-8 in favor of WPI.

Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) stopped three shots for the hosts and Grace Moore (Boston, MA) stonewalled seven for MIT.

WPI hosts reigning NEWMAC tournament champion Smith Tuesday at 3:45pm and MIT, a NEWMAC finalist a year ago, hosts Wellesley 6pm Tuesday.
