WORCESTER – Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) scored off an assist from Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA), and Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) stopped four shots, as the WPI field hockey team moved back into the win column with a 1-0 NEWMAC victory over visiting Smith Tuesday afternoon in Alumni Stadium. Lindsey Giorgi (Barre, MA), the reigning WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week, also notched an early defensive save in the effort.
With the win, the 2019 Engineers (14-1, 4-1 NEWMAC) own the most wins in a single season since the vaunted 1992 campaign that racked up 18. Smith, last season's NEWMAC tournament champion, dips to 3-12 and 1-5.
The first play of the game saw Giorgi make the defensive stop at 3:05. The aforementioned duo then connected for the ninth time in two seasons when O'Sullivan carried the ball into the circle and dished off to Sullivan for her 21st career goal at 14:21. Of the nine tallies, six have been O'Sullivan to Sullivan.
WPI had the 15-10 margin in shots overall and was awarded nine of 13 penalty corners while both teams took aim at the net five times. Victoria Mellow (San Diego, CA) accounted for a quartet of shots while Vivian Nelson (Edmonton, Canada) was responsible for two – both on-goal – and Taylor Wells (Bryn Mawr, PA) stopped four shots for Smith.
The Engineers head to nationally-ranked Babson on Saturday for a noon start and the Pioneers hosts Mount Holyoke at 1pm, also on Saturday.
