WORCESTER -- With three goals in the first three quarters of play, third-seeded WPI defended Alumni Stadium with a 3-0 win over sixth-seeded Mount Holyoke Tuesday night in a NEWMAC Field Hockey Tournament quarterfinal. WPI will travel to play second-seeded MIT at 6 p.m. Thursday in a semifinal contest.
The win marks the first NEWMAC Tournament win for the Engineers since a 2-1 victory over Babson in 2008, and improves WPI's mark to 17-2. Mount Holyoke sees its season come to an end with a 9-10 record.
The Engineers opened the scoresheet in the first quarter, when at 9:09 junior midfielder Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) carried the ball up the center of the field and hit one into the back of the boards, for her seventh goal of the season.
The Crimson and Grey kept their foot on the pedal when at 27:33 junior Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) sent in a backhanded cross to find senior Carlee Irish (Saratoga Springs, NY) at the end of the play who put it away for her third marker of the season. Senior back Hannah Larochelle (New Boston, NH) capped the scoring when she drove up the field, split both the opposing midfield and defense to drive the ball into the goal for the first of her career.
With two saves by freshman Gabrielle Acquista (Longmeadow, MA) and one big defensive save by junior Jackie Cardin (Manchester, NH), the Engineers held Mount Holyoke scoreless. Mount Holyoke netminder Morgan Turner (Chester, NJ) totaled four saves, and sophomore midfielder Margaret Robb (Summit, NJ) was the only Lyon with multiple shots on goal.
For the game, WPI enjoyed a 14-7 edge in shots, while the visitors held a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
