Hynes and O’Sullivan Draw National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Region Praise

Gilbert, AZ --- The WPI duo of Shannon Hynes (Auburn, MA) and Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole MA) were selected All-New England East this week by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).  It marked the first time the Engineers had a pair of players named to the squads since Hall of Famers Nicole Maglione '09 and Kelly Johnson '10 accomplished the feat in 2006.

Hynes was named to the first team after earning second team accolades a season ago.  The back joins Johnson (2006 and 2009) as the only player to earn all-region honors twice since 2000 while O'Sullivan earned a second team spot at forward.

An anchor in the back, Hynes helped a WPI defense that allowed just 23 goals in 20 contests, good enough for second in the NEWMAC in goals per game allowed.  The senior was versatile, contributing offensively on corners, and netted goals versus Lasell and MIT while doling out five assists overall.  Hynes, a three-time All-NEWMAC selection, participated in the Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division III Senior Game on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, PA.

O'Sullivan was a goal-scoring machine as she traded in her second team All-NEWMAC honor last season for first team distinction in 2019.  The forward led all NEWMAC players with 21 regular season goals.  The junior reached the 100-point milestone during the season and posted back-to-back games where she had a hat trick in a conference victory over Wheaton and then four goals the following contest at Conn College.

The Crimson and Gray enjoyed their best season in over a quarter century under 13th year head coach Lisa Moreau.  WPI posted a 17-3 overall record with all three of its losses coming to teams that won NCAA tournament games.
