• WPI Breaks Ground for a Stunning – and Sustainable – Sports and Recreation Center

    WPI President Dennis Berkey and members of the WPI Board of Trustees, along with the Moonraker 2.0 robot, broke ground today for a 145,000-square-foot sports and recreation center. The new center will be built into the hillside at the west end of the WPI Quadrangle and is designed to meet LEED certification standards. The facility is scheduled to open in August 2012.

    Cape Cod, MA --- WPI men’s basketball player Jeffery Robinson has been selected to the All-ECAC New England third team. It’s the third honor for the junior in the last two week as the junior garnered first team All-NEWMAC honors and second team All-D3hoops.com Northeast region accolades. Robinson is the first Engineer to be honored as an All-ECAC player since Antoine Coleman grabbed first team honors in 2008.

    Minneapolis, MN --- WPI men’s basketball player Jeffery Robinson has been named second team All-Northeast region by D3hoops.com. Robinson is the first Engineer to be honored as an all-region player by D3hoops.com since Antoine Coleman garnered first team honors in 2008. Robinson led the Engineers in scoring (19.3 ppg), free throw percentage (83.4%), 3-pointers made (54) and 3-point percentage (40.6%).

    Springfield, MA --- The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today that Ken Kaufman has been named Chair of the Bob Cousy Award Committee. Kaufman, former head coach at WPI and former president of the NABC, will serve as the primary consultant to the Hall of Fame in regard to the annual award that recognizes college basketball's top point guard.

    There is plenty of exciting WPI athletics action on tap for Saturday. Five teams have home contests on Saturday as crunch time approaches for the winter sport squads. Saturday marks the final home contests for Wrestling and Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving. All three teams face Bridgewater State with wrestling on campus at noon in Alumni Gym and the swim meet at Clark beginning at 1pm. If basketball is your game, Harrington Auditorium is the place to be. Men's Basketball gets things started at 1pm versus rival Wheaton while Women's Basketball faces NEWMAC unbeaten Babson at 3pm. At the doubleheader, the two programs will honor the memory of Mary Chatfield and welcome many children from Big Brothers-Big Sisters.

    Worcester, MA --- WPI men's basketball student-athlete Ben Etten has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). Etten, who now advances to the national ballot for All-American consideration, is one of five players who were selected to the first team in the College Division, which is comprised of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA programs in New England, New York and Eastern Canada.
