  • Coppola Picked by the ECAC as New England's Top Men's Basketball Rookie

    Centerville, MA --- WPI freshman guard Marco Coppola has been named ECAC Division III New England Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year based on a recent vote of regional coaches. Coppola, along with Player of the Year DaQuan Brooks of Western Connecticut, highlight the announcement of the conference’s all-star team. The ECAC Rookie of the Year honor marks the first for WPI under 11th year head coach Chris Bartley.

    Minneapolis, MN --- WPI men’s basketball standout Matt Carr has been named fourth team All-Northeast region by D3hoops.com. It marks the third straight year and the eighth time in the last nine years that an Engineer player has earned all-region status from the website. rr has been busy this offseason on the postseason awards circuit. A two-time Academic All-America, including first team this season, he also repeated as an All-NEWMAC first team pick and was a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy.
  • LOWELL SUN: Locals star for WPI basketball team

    It was a great finish recently for the WPI senior men's basketball players, including Lowell High grads David Brown and Jaime Shannon. Brown finishes his college career on teams with a combined record of 84-26, winning 20 or more every year. Shannon's career ends at 81-29 (63-20 at WPI), which includes his freshman campaign at Brandeis. In their final collegiate game, Shannon had 21 points and 5 assists, and Brown posted 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Shannon was also named MVP of the League Tournament.

    Softball's Christa Coscia and Men's Basketball's Jaime Shannon have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Coscia struck out a career-high 11 batters en route to a two-hit, 5-0, shutout against Newbury to open the 2012 campaign on Sunday. Shannon poured in 14 of his 21 points on Sunday in the second half to help lead the Engineers to an 87-66 victory over Salve Regina in the ECAC D-III New England Men's Basketball Championship game. The senior picked up the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award for his effort.

    Worcester, MA --- Jaime Shannon scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half to lead WPI to the ECAC Division III New England Championship with a 87-66 win over Salve Regina on Saturday at the Harrington Auditorium. With the victory, WPI (20-7) has reached the 20-win plateau for nine consecutive seasons, the second longest such streak in the country behind only Wooster of Ohio who has 16. Salve Regina concludes its campaign with a 21-10 mark.
  • Birrell Shines as Salve Regina Defeats Elms in ECAC Men's Basketball Semifinal

    Worcester, MA --- Ryan Birrell exploded for 18 second-half points and recorded a near triple-double to power Salve Regina to the ECAC New England Championship Finals on Saturday at the Harrington Auditorium, defeating Elms, 70-59. Salve Regina ups their record to 21-9 while Elms wraps up its season with an 18-11 mark. In the second semifinal of the afternoon, host WPI will play Bridgewater State. The winner of that contest will face Salve Regina on Sunday, March 4th at 12:00pm for the ECAC New England Championship.
  • Shannon and Kolb Propel Men's Basketball to ECAC Semifinal Triumph

    Worcester, MA --- Senior Jaime Shannon poured in a game-best 17 points to help lead top-seed and host WPI to a 75-50 triumph over fourth-seeded Bridgewater State in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament this afternoon. The Engineers, who are making their first ECAC tournament appearance since the 2004 season, improve to 19-7 overall and move to the title game match-up tomorrow at 12 against second-seeded Salve Regina. The Seahawks defeated third-seeded Elms, 70-59, earlier today.

    Babson Park, MA --- Three WPI Men’s Basketball student-athletes were named to the 2011-12 NEWMAC All-Academic team on Thursday, as senior Matt Carr made the team for the third consecutive season. WPI finished second in the NEWMAC with Clark, who also had three honorees. Juniors Craig Melillo and Joe Wesoloski were both second-time selections.

    Babson Park, MA --- A trio of WPI Men’s Basketball players have been named All-Conference players by the NEWMAC on Wednesday. Senior Matt Carr was selected to the first team for the second straight year while Marco Coppola was tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Year and was joined by senior Jaime Shannon. It marks just the third time in the 14-year history of the NEWMAC that the Engineers have had three players honored by the league and Coppola joins Ryan Cain (2004) as the only Crimson and Gray player to take home Rookie of the Year honors.
  • Men's Basketball's Carr Selected as a Jostens Trophy Finalist

    Salem, VA --- WPI senior men's basketball player Matt Carr was named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. today. The club is responsible for the initial review of annual nominations and narrowed the pool to 10 men and 10 women finalists. The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most oustanding men's and women's Division III basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service.
  • Men's Basketball Named Top Seed for ECAC Championships

    Centerville, MA --- The WPI Men’s Basketball program was selected as the top seed for the 2012 ECAC New England Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Engineers, who are in the Tournament for the first time since 2004, received a first round bye in the seven-team tournament and will host the semifinals and championship games on Saturday and Sunday in Harrington Auditorium. WPI currently sports a 18-7 record and has participated in postseason competition in eight of the last nine seasons.
  • Springfield Knocks Off Men's Basketball In Hard-Fought NEWMAC Semifinal

    Cambridge, MA --- Junior Alex Berthiaume poured in a game-high 22 points to help propel third-seeded Springfield to a 66-60 win over WPI in the second of two NEWMAC semifinals at MIT’s Rockwell Cage on Saturday afternoon. WPI (18-7), ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division III Northeast regional rankings, hopes for a Pool C (at-large) bid to the NCAA Championships. Selections will be announced on Monday at noon.
  • Carr Selected to Capital One Men's Basketball Academic All-America First Team

    Worcester, MA --- WPI men's basketball student-athlete Matt Carr has been named a Capital One Division III Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). Carr garnered first team honors this winter as a senior after being selected to the second team a season ago. He is the 11th WPI athlete to be a multiple-time winner and just the 12th - joining James Naughton (1996) as the only men’s basketball player - to be distinguished as a first-teamer.

    Worcester, MA ---The senior trio of Matt Carr, David Brown and Jaime Shannon led WPI past visiting Clark, 75-54, in a NEWMAC men’s basketball contest on Saturday afternoon at Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers wrap up their regular season with an 18-6 record and an 8-4 mark in the NEWMAC standings. WPI, who is ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division III Northeast, had already locked the second seed in next week’s NEWMAC Tournament and will play third-seeded Springfield in a semifinal on Saturday at 3pm at MIT.

    Worcester, MA --- Junior Will Tashman drained 8-of-11 from the field and finished with 20 points and a contest-high 12 rebounds to help lead MIT to a 71-66 triumph over host WPI in NEWMAC men’s basketball action this evening. Marco Coppola led WPI with 16 points while Matt Carr recorded 12 points and a career-high six blocks. With the win the Cardinal and Gray, ranked third in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, improve to 23-1 and 11-1 in the conference standings while WPI slips to 17-6 and 7-4 in the seven-team loop.

    Dover, NH --- A senior center on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute men's basketball team, Somersworth's Matt Carr has been named to the Capital One Division III all-academic team in District I by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA) for the second year in a row. The former St. Thomas Aquinas standout sports a 3.92 grade-point average while majoring in chemical engineering with a minor in chemistry.

    Worcester, MA --- Jaime Shannon scored 18 points while hitting 3-of-4 free throws in the final 17.9 seconds to propel WPI to a 70-69 victory over visiting Springfield on Saturday in a NEWMAC men’s basketball contest. WPI, who is ranked fifth in the initial NCAA Division III Northeast regional rankings, pushes its record to 17-5 on the season and 7-3 in NEWMAC action. Springfield is now 15-8 overall and 6-4 in NEWMAC play. WPI hosts nationally-ranked MIT Wednesday at 7pm at Harrington Auditorium.

    Norton, MA --- Senior Anthony Weeks poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the Wheaton College men’s basketball team to a 71-69 win over WPI in NEWMAC action Wednesday night at Emerson Gymnasium. The Engineers fronted a furious rally as freshman Sam Longwell connected on a trio of 3-pointers to cut a 12-point lead to two by a potential game-tying layup at final whistle spun out. WPI hosts Springfield Saturday at 2 pm in a battle of teams tied foe second place in the NEWMAC.

    Babson Park, MA --- WPI senior Matt Carr has been named NEWMAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 5th. Carr shared the honor with Mitch Renshaw of Clark en route to picking up his fourth career weekly award and second this season from the conference. Carr drained an eye-popping 21-of-26 (80.8%) shots from the floor en route to averaging 23 points and six rebounds in a pair of NEWMAC victories last week.

    Women's Basketball's Theresa Logan and Men's Basketball's Matt Carr have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Logan was instrumental in a pair of NEWMAC wins while posting a career-best 26 points and seven steals versus Wheaton and led the squad with nine rebounds at Springfield. Carr averaged 23 points in two games including 19 in the second half against Babson.

    New London, CT --- Senior Matt Carr had a game-high 25 points while freshman Sam Longwell had 15 of his career-high 18 points in the first half leading WPI to a 82-76 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game. WPI shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the second half (15-24) and finished 32-56 from the field (57.1 percent) while making seven of 17 from three-point range.

    Springfield, MA --- Sean Martin scored a lay-up at the buzzer to lead his Springfield men's basketball team to a pulsating 65-63 victory in overtime over WPI in a battle of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference leaders this evening at SC's Blake Arena. It was Martin's only basket of the game and came as the game clock expired. Matt Carr led the Engineers with 25 points and 12 boards while Domenick Mastacusa scored a career-high 16 points

    Cambridge, MA --- Leading by one, 54-53, with 9:40 to go, visiting WPI went on a 12-2 run over the next 3:17 to open up an 11-point lead en route to an 80-68 upset of No. 3 MIT in NEWMAC men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon. The loss is the first of the season for the Cardinal and Gray, who fall to 16-1 and 4-1 in NEWMAC play. The Worcester Engineers improve to 14-3 overall with the win, which was number 200 in the career of head coach Chris Bartley, and are also 4-1 in league play.

    Worcester, MA ---Freshman Marco Coppola registered a career-best 29 points and senior Matt Carr notched his sixth double-double of the season and 13th of his career to lift WPI to a 64-51 triumph over host Clark Tuesday evening in a NEWMAC men’s basketball game telecasted locally by TV Charter 3. Coppola buried 10-of-12 shots from field reaching the 20 point mark for the fourth time during his freshman season. Carr finished with 13 points and a season-high 14 boards.

With the win, the Lyons move to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Engineers, ranked No. 24 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, slip to 12-3 on the season and 2-1 in NEWMAC action.
