  • Bartley Named 2013 Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award Winner

    Atlanta, GA --- WPI men's basketball head coach Chris Bartley is the recipient of the 2013 Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year award. Bartley received his honor Friday at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta as part of the Final Four weekend. The award is presented annually to the top division III men's basketball coach. Named after the longtime Franklin & Marshall coach, Robinson has over 800 wins and is currently twelfth on the all-time wins list.

    Boston, MA --- WPI men’s basketball coach Chris Bartley was announced on Monday as a finalist for the 2013 John McLendon National Coach of the Year. The finalists include Dana Altman (Oregon), John Beilein (Michigan), Tom Billeter (Augustana College), Derrick Clark (Metropolitan State), Jim Crews (Saint Louis), Jim Crutchfield (West Liberty), Jim Larranaga (Miami), Johnny Tauer (Saint Thomas) and John Thompson III (Georgetown)
  • Coppola Earns D3hoops.com All-Region Honor

    Minneapolis, MN --- WPI men's basketball player Marco Coppola has been selected fourth team All-Northeast region by D3hoops.com. It marks the fourth straight season and the ninth time in the last 10 that an Crimson and Gray player has taken home all-region accolades from the website. Coppola led the Engineers offensive attack with 16.0 points per game to go along with 62 assists and 46 steals. He finished in the top 10 in the NEWMAC in seven statistical categories
  • 17 Winter Student-Athletes Earn NEWMAC All-Academic Honors

    Wellesley, MA --- The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced its 2013 Academic All-Conference teams in late February. Between men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving, WPI had 17 student-athletes fit the bill. Academic All-Conference Honorees must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale after the 2012 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and participated as a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

    Worcester, MA --- Joe Hassell netted a squad-best 18 points with six rebounds to help propel Randolph-Macon to a 79-68 triumph over fourth-ranked WPI in the second-round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament this evening at Assumption’s Laska Gymnasium. The Engineers, who are making their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last nine years, ends their record-setting campaign at 26-3 overall.

On Tuesday, WPI announced details of a pre-sale of game tickets for Saturday’s game at Assumption.
  • Balanced Attack Carries Men's Basketball In NCAA Tournament Opener

    Worcester, MA --- Marco Coppola drained nine of his 14 shots from the field for a game-best 23 points as he helped lead fourth-ranked WPI to an 80-67 triumph over visiting Purchase College SUNY in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament this evening. The Engineers (26-2) move on to play Randolph Macon in the second round as the Yellow Jackets defeated Stevens, 69-60, earlier in the day. The site and will be announced Sunday.

The 25-2 Engineer squad will make its ninth overall appearance in the NCAA Championships and seventh in the past nine years under head coach Chris Bartley.

    Worcester, MA --- The NEWMAC Men's Basketball Tournament championship game between top-seed and host WPI and third-seeded Springfield is scheduled for 1pm today at Harrington Auditorium. Due to the current winter weather, all fans are strongly encouraged to park in new Park Avenue Garage. Spectators should proceed up the stairs to quad level to enter Harrington. Those needing handicapped access should use the ramp into the Sports and Recreation Center.

    Worcester, MA --- Chris Bartley was 33 years old in the summer of 2001 and pursuing his first collegiate head coaching position, and WPI wanted to know everything about its top candidate. So here came the inquiry for all interviewees: Where did Bartley see himself in 10 years? “I was like, honestly, I think we’re going to win a national championship,” Bartley recalled before a recent WPI practice. Naturally, his response drew a quizzical reaction. WPI didn’t win one game the prior season.

    Worcester, MA --- Zach Karalis poured in a career-best 25 points to help the WPI men’s basketball team claim a share of its eighth NEWMAC regular season crown in the last 10 years as the Engineers went down Park Ave. and defeated crosstown rival Clark 66-51 in the regular season finale for both squads. With the win, WPI claims the top seed in next week’s NEWMAC Tournament due to the third tiebreaker - record versus common opponents outside the conference.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was a wild night in the Rockwell Cage where the No. 22 MIT men’s basketball team claimed at least a share of the regular season New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference title with a 69-60 upset over No. 5 WPI Wednesday evening. Sophomore Marco Coppola led all scorers with 22 points for WPI while teammate Ryan Kolb added 17 for the Engineers.
  • No. 2 Men's Basketball Dealt First Loss on the Road at Springfield

    Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College men's basketball team knocked off WPI, the nation's second-ranked team, 66-60, on Sunday afternoon in Blake Arena in a NEWMAC clash. Springfield has now beaten three teams this year who at one point were ranked in the top five in the D3hoops.com national poll, with earlier victories over MIT and Amherst. The Pride improved to 16-7, 7-3 in league play, while WPI, which entered the game as the lone remaining undefeated team in Division III, drops to 22-1, 9-1.

    Worcester, MA --- Five different players reached double figures in scoring and Ryan Kolb collected his third double-double of the season and fourth of his career as host WPI defeated Wheaton 86-59 in a NEWMAC men’s basketball contest played on Wednesday evening. WPI, ranked second in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, remains undefeated on the season, improving to 22-0 overall and 9-0 in conference action. Joe Wesoloski tossed in seven points and gobbled up eight boards in the opening stanza.

    Babson Park, MA --- Ryan Kolb paced four WPI players in double figures with a game-best 17 points to lift the visiting Engineers to a 66-43 NEWMAC road win at Babson on Wednesday evening. WPI reached the 20-win mark for the 10th straight year - the second longest current streak in Division III behind Wooster (OH) (16). The Crimson and Gray also became the first team among all three NCAA divisions (1,038 teams) to reach 20 victories in 2012-13 only to be joined moments later by Michigan of the Big 10.

Bartley’s success has been undeniable, as he led the WPI men’s basketball team to nine consecutive 20-win seasons entering the current campaign. Unwilling to settle, Bartley constantly sought ways to improve as a coach. That led him to the discovery last fall of Spencer Wood, a renowned sports psychologist.

    Norton, MA --- WPI, ranked No.8 overall in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, opened up a 26-21 halftime lead with a 32-point second half to defeat the Wheaton men’s basketball team, 58-41, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium. The Engineers were paced offensively by sophomore guard Sam Longwell who poured in a game-high 22 points on 8-for-16 shooting, including a 3-for-5 showing from long distance, and nine rebounds.

    Worcester, MA --- Junior Ryan Kolb notched his third career double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds as he helped lead #8 WPI to an 87-71 triumph over Worcester State in non-conference men’s basketball action this evening at the Lancer Gym. WPI was also paced by sophomore Sam Longwell who finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Kolb did his damage off 8-for-19 shooting while he was also 6-for-8 from the free throw line with a pair of triples.
