Norton, MA --- Led by senior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA), four of five starters registered double-digit scoring as WPI went on the road and defeated Wheaton 74-64 Wednesday in a NEWMAC Men's Basketball matchup in Emerson Gymnasium.
The Engineers move back to .500 (7-7) while the Lyons dip to 9-4. Both teams are now 1-2 in conference play.
Rodgers netted 19 with seven defensive rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Jake Wisniewski (West Brookfield, MA) and freshman Reid Walker (Lithia, FL) each handed in 11 points and six boards. Senior Aaron Todd (York, ME) pitched in with 10 points and five caroms.
Wheaton's starters were paced by junior David Carbonello (Windham, NH) with 14 points while sophomore Alex DuBrow (Foxboro, MA) came off the bench to add 10. Junior Riley Tetreault (Walpole, MA) hauled in a team-best six boards.
WPI got off to a hot start, using an 11-2 run to start the game. The Engineers would maintain a lead of at least seven points and as many as 12, until four unanswered Wheaton layups over the final two minutes of the half would close the gap, 32-30.
The teams traded points to start the second half, but back-to-back three-pointers for WPI would give them an eight-point advantage once again.
WPI gained their largest lead of the night, 13 points, with a layup by freshman Dakota Wheeler (Easthampton, MA) with 7:56 left on the clock. Five consecutive points from Carbonello and a pair of senior Ryan Fogarty (Walpole, MA) free throws, however, would bring the Lyons within four points at the 1:53 minute mark. WPI answered with 10 points to finish up the game and claim a 10-point NEWMAC victory.
Wheaton used 18 of WPI's turnovers to score 21 points, while WPI out-rebounded the Lyons, 38-33.
The Engineers continue on the road with a 3pm game Saturday at Coast Guard. The Lyons entertain MIT at the same time.
