Fitchburg, MA --- Reid Walker (Lithia, FL) paced all players with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as WPI went on the road and knocked of Fitchburg State 63-56 in a defensive-minded men's basketball match-up on Saturday afternoon.
WPI, which is receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, is now 6-0 on the season, its best start since beginning the 2016-2017 campaign with seven straight wins. The Falcons are now 2-6, with half of their losses to undefeated teams (WPI, No. 2 Williams and RV Nichols).
Defense took center stage in the first half as WPI took a 23-23 advantage into the locker room at intermission despite on shooting 25% from the floor. The Engineers themselves held Fitchburg State to just 27.6% shooting and did not allow a made 3-pointer over the opening 20 minutes.
Walker, who scored 12 in the second half, was joined in double figures in scoring by Jake Needleman (Morganville, NJ), who had 10 points while Jake Wisniewski (West Brookfield, MA) also posted double digits in rebounding with 11. For Walker it was his second double-double of the young season and fourth of sophomore's career. Wisniewski, Kahleb Downing (Middletown, CT) and Garrett Stephenson (Townsend, MA) all finished with eight points for the visitors while Neddleman and John Wessel (New Oxford, PA) each doled out three assists.
Kameron Jimenez-Fox (Boston, MA) led the Falcons with 11 points, including the final go-ahead layup for the home team just over four minutes into the second half, while Nicholas Tracy (Indianapolis, IN) and Charles Doss (Fitchburg, MA) poured in 10 points for the hosts. Anselm Edegbe (Benin, Nigeria) was a force on the glass for Fitchburg State, registered 11 boards, including eight defensive rebounds and shared team-high assist honors with Tracy with three helpers on the day. Tayjaun McKenzie (Lynn, MA) contributed seven boards and four rebounds for FSU.
WPI continues its four-game road trip Tuesday with a 7pm contest at Framingham State. Fitchburg State is on the road on Tuesday, venturing to Johnson & Wales for a 7pm tipoff.
