Worcester, MA --- WPI men's rowing's varsity eight defeated a strong Bates boat for the first time in four years in racing Sunday morning with the University of Rochester on Lake Quinsigamond.
The varsity eight made of John Morrissey (New Milford, CT), Matt Foley (Pepperell, MA), Kendall Cotton (Harvard, MA), Alex Barat (Franklin Park, NJ), Gary Jackson (Hopedale, MA), Joe Sperry (Northampton, MA), Keegan Cole (Spencer, MA), Nick Van Sciver (Wayland, MA), and coxswain Mitra Marvasti-Sitterly (Glastonbury, CT) out stroked a talented Bates by just two tenths of a second (6:06.1 to 6:06.3).
The second varsity eight of Norm Harris (Gilford, NH), Nick Cebry (Bedford, MA), Michael Beinor (Sutton, MA), Matt Deptula (Budd Lake, NJ), Brede Doerner (Branford, CT), Dean Schifilliti (Ossining, NY), Danny Singer (Eldersburg, MD), Jackson Krupnick (Asheville, NC) and coxswain Kelsey Regan (Winchedon, MA) lost a nail biter to the Bobcats, coming up just a quarter of a second short (6:17.7 to 6:17.95) while the third varsity eight of Zach Gendreau (Galesville, WI), Dan Seaman (Claremont, NH), Keegan Train (Excelsior, MN), Paul Esteve (Colchester, CT), Scott Cazier (Wheat Ridge, CO), Chris Sample (Groveland, MA), Ryan Killea (Hillsborough, CA), Bobby Ronacher (Dunedin, FL) and coxswain Oliva Perry (Canton, MA) also finished second to Bates (6:28.69), falling by less than two seconds.
In the varsity four race the second boat of Kyle Bessette (Chatham, MA), Victor Vazquez (Lynn, MA), Jack Perry (Londonderry, NH), Paul Danielson (Niskayuna, NY) and coxswain John Lomi (Coventry, RI) finshed third (7:36.7) while the first boat of Tony DiBiasio (Manchester, NH), Jason Zhao (Qinhuangdao, China), Joe Lidwin (Chintilly, VA), Matthew Ryder (Lebanon, NH), and coxswain Oliva Perry placed fourth (7:46.6).
WPI Men's Rowing returns to the water Saturday, welcoming Trinity, UNH, Washington College, Ithaca, Colby and Coast Guard to Lake Quinsiagamond.
