Lowell, MA --- The WPI men's rowing team started its 2014-2015 campaign at the Textile River Regatta in Lowell on Sunday. The Engineers had several strong showings, including a pair of gold medals and a third place showing.
The varsity eight composed of Kendell Cotton (Harvard, MA), Matt Foley (Pepperell, MA), Dean Schifilliti (Ossining, NY), Jackson Krupnick (Ashville, NC), Danny Singer (Eldersburg, MD), Nick Cebry (Bedford, MA), Keegan Cole (Spencer, MA), Matt Deptula (Budd Lake, NJ) and coxswain Mitra Marvasti-Sitterly (Glastonbury, CT) captured the men's club eight by 30 seconds (18:43.479) while the second varsity eight of Michael Eaton (Exeter, NH), Joe Sperry (Northampton, MA), Michael Beinor (Sutton, MA), Dan Seaman (Claremont, NY), Norm Harris (Gilford, NH), Jack Perry (Londonderry, NH), Brede Doerner (Branford, CT), Paul Esteve (Colchester, CT) and coxswain Kelsey Regan (Winchendon, MA) earned the bronze medal (19:14.575).
Two other WPI boats had impressive finishes in the club eight. The third varsity eight of Keegan Train (Minnetonka, MN), Liam Rucker (Oakton, VA), Scott Cazier (Wheat Ridge, CO), Chris Sample (Groveland, MA), Bobby Ronacher, Ryan Killea (Hillsborough, CA), Matthew Ryder (Lebanon, NH), Paul Danielson (Niskayuna, NY) and coxswain Lomi was tenth (20:12.793) and the novice eight of Nicholas Carabillo (Kinderhook, NY), Everett Harding (Lee, MA), Jeremiah Leonard (Lyme Center, NH), Zach Estrella (Berkley, MA), James Vorosmarti (Center Valley, PA), Jonathan Metzger (Glastonbury, CT), Zack Lingham (Guilford, CT), Jeremy Hemingway (Westford, MA) and coxswain Julianna Mello (Dartmouth, MA) crossed the line in 14th (21:20.661).
Earlier in the day the same novice eight with coxswain Sarah Terwilliger (Guilford, CT) won the rookie event in a time of 21:04.103 while a boat made up of Alex Legere (Hooksett, NH), Anderson DeRosier (Bethel, CT), Alex Kasparek (Brookline, NH), Devin Stevens (Northbridge, MA), Gavin Yu (Changchun, China), Austen Couvertier (Islip, NY), Daniel Cammarata (Simsbury, CT), Alvaro Galindo (Caracas, Venezuela) and coxswain Kenedi Heather (Taunton, MA) hit the line in sixth with a time of 23:47.022.
Finally to close the day, the varsity eight finished third (top college boat) in the open eight with a time of 19:06.833 while the second varsity eight with Rucker in the three seat and John Lomi (Coventry, RI) as the coxswain was fifth (19:48.603)
WPI hosts the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Saturday, October 11th.
