Men’s Rowing Enjoys Stellar Day at New England Rowing Championships

Worcester, MA --- The varsity eight captured the petite final and two other varsity boats earned medals for WPI at the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday. As a team, the Engineers amassed 37.33 points to finish sixth out of 24 schools.

The varsity eight found itself in a loaded morning heat, posting a time of 6:18.133 to finish fourth, trailing BC (6:10.203), Williams (6:13.155) and Wesleyan (6:13.576) and ahead of Tufts (6:25.050), UMass (6:38.879) and UMass Lowell (7:25.739).  The afternoon saw the Boynton Hillers take a tightly-contest petite final that saw four of the seven boats finish within five seconds.  WPI crossed the finish line in a winning time of 6:24.165, edging Tufts (6:26.866), Middlebury (6:28.234) and Colby (6:29.294).

The second varsity eight claimed victory in its AM heat before falling to Williams by less than a half a second in the grand final.  The Engineers registered a time of 6:24.867 to topple Wesleyan (6:28.497), Trinity (6:30.661), UMass (6:35.216) and Colby (6:46.644) in the morning than trimmed over four seconds (6:20.626) in the nail-biting PM finals.

Due to the size of the field, the third varsity just competed in the afternoon and the Crimson and Gray picked up a bronze medal.  WPI crossed the finish line in a time of 6:35.930, just behind Wesleyan (6:30.765) and Bates (6:33.928) and well ahead of Tufts (6:49.420), Williams (6:52.595) and Boston College (6:57.709).

The men's novice eight took home a fifth place showing (7:08.629) in the petite final after an identical placing (7:03.777) in its morning heat.
