WORCESTER – The WPI men's rowing varsity eight placed second while the varsity four and third varsity eight won their races as the Engineers hosted Trinity, Ithaca, Conn College and UNH Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond. The course featured an eight to nine mile per hour tailwind and a choppy final 1,000 meters.
The top eight (6:05.31) was just over a second behind Trinity (6:04.15). Ithaca (6:10.45) and Colby (6:10.62) were .17 apart in third and fourth while UNH was fifth. The second varsity eight was also a runner up to the Bantams in an even closer race (6:17.2 – 6:17.44). Colby, Ithaca and UNH followed in third, fourth and fifth.
The varsity four clocked a 7:07.35 to defeat Conn College A (7:12.17), Colby (7:18.26), Conn College B (7:19.92) and Trinity (7:34.36) in the first race of the day. The 3V followed with a 5.7 second victory in a head-to-head competition with Ithaca (6:32.2 – 6:37.9).
WPI hosts Tufts on Sunday in the Baker Cup, as well Skidmore and Rhode Island beginning with the Varsity Eight at 8:40am.
