Worcester, MA --- Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, MA) netted the only goal of the game with just over 20 minutes remaining to spark WPI to a 1-0 shutout over visiting Fitchburg State in a non-conference men's soccer contest played on Wednesday evening. The Engineers, who have now won two straight, improve to 6-1 on the season while Fitchburg State dips to 0-6.
In a match that saw both teams have multiple quality scoring opportunities, Sean Galligan (Weymouth, MA) threaded a beautiful long through ball to a streaking Crevoiserat, who beat a diving FSU goalkeeper to the far post for the freshman's second career goal at 68:11. The helper was the first of the season for Galligan.
The visiting Falcons would muster the only two remaining shots of the game but could not connect on the equalizer as the first bid was saved by WPI net-minder Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) and the second attempted sailed wide left of the goal.
Wong made three saves on the night to help move his overall record to 5-1 for the Crimson and Gray. Fitchburg State received five stops from goalkeeper Aidan Hanratty (East Bridgewater, MA) while Colin Shea (Hanover, MA) cleared a ball out of danger in the first stanza and Brian Bettencourt (Norton, MA) knocked a ball off the line in the second half.
For the contest, WPI enjoyed a 13-7 edge in shots spurred by the duo of Chris Ciampa (Danvers, MA) and Jason Hopkins (Mendon, MA), who combined to total 11 attempts. The hosts also took four of the game's six corner kicks.
WPI returns to the field on Saturday hosting NEWMAC rival MIT at 5pm as part of Homecoming weekend. Fitchburg State continues its MASCAC slate on Saturday with a noon road match at Bridgewater State.
