WORCESTER -- Sophomore Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) and senior Chris Murray (Canton, MA) scored within 1:26 of each other in the second half as WPI bested Emerson 3-0 Saturday evening in a NEWMAC men's soccer match at Alumni Stadium.
WPI, receiving votes in the D3soccer.com Men's Top 25 and ranked sixth in the NSCAA NCAA Division III New England poll, benefitted from an own goal 1:27 into the game. Sixty five minutes later, senior Kurt Naugler (Westford, MA) dished to Nemes through the defense for the second goal of the game. Murray followed up with a close shot off a pass from sophomore Pav Christidis (Fairport, NY).
Senior Derek Thomson (Concord, NH) accounted for a pair of Emerson shots while junior Duncan Bochicchio (Los Angeles, CA) also had a chance for the Lions.
WPI sophomore Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY) improved to 3-0-1 with the shutout while senior Carter Bowers (Gorham, ME) posted four saves in net for the Lions.
The Engineers outshot the Lions 11-3 and were awarded five of the six corners in the game.
The Crimson and Gray remain atop the NEWMAC, along with MIT, a 1-0 winner versus Coast Guard, with nine points.
WPI (9-2-1, 3-0 NEWMAC) heads to Boston to take on Wentworth Wednesday at 7pm and Emerson (3-7, 0-3 NEWMAC) stays local at Suffolk Monday at 6:45pm.
