WORCESTER -- Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) and Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA) netted second half goals to help WPI knock off crosstown Worcester State 2-0 Friday afternoon in the 2017 opener for both squads.
With both teams playing stingy defense throughout, WPI dented the scoring column on its sixth corner of the contest as Beatty served to Nemes' head six yards off the back post for the senior captain's 14th career goal in the 64th minute.
With Worcester State pushing forward looking for the equalizer a WPI clear following a Lancer corner found Beatty and Luke Reiniger (Rowley, MA) at midfield on a 2-on-1. Reiniger's feed from the right side sent Beatty in alone on the goal and the sophomore buried the shot past the diving WSU goalkeeper.
WPI goalie Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) recorded the only save of the day en route to his 15th career clean sheet. Jason Barrett (Spencer, MA) did not record a save in net for Worcester State.
The host Engineers enjoyed a 10-3 edge in shots while both teams attempted eight corners.
WPI is right back in action tomorrow, traveling to UMass Dartmouth at 4pm. Worcester State is off until Wednesday when they host Keene State at 4pm.
