Men’s Soccer and Nationally-Ranked Springfield Play to Scoreless Draw

Mark Calnan

WORCESTER – WPI senior goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) and Springfield junior backstop Stewart Frank (Pittsfield, NY) totaled 10 saves in a scoreless draw Saturday night in an important NEWMAC Men's Soccer match in Alumni Stadium.

The teams end the evening unbeaten in conference action at 5-0-1 while No. 12/14 Springfield is now 13-0-1 overall and the Engineers move to 10-4-1 on the year.

In the 20th minute, Pride sophomore Dexter Tenn (South Windsor, CT) fired a shot in from nearly 30 yards out. Hoeckele scooped up the ball and boomed it back deep in the other end of the field to help setup a chance by sophomore Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA), which ended up going high.

Seven minutes later, senior Danny Murphy's (Old Saybrook, CT) kick threaded traffic only to find a waiting Hoeckele. Sophomore Jimmy Wilcox (Burlington, CT) came off the bench and drilled a close free kick that was halted by the Engineer senior at 37:34. Moments before the first intermission, WPI sophomore Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) was in a one-on-one with a Pride defender before he fired off a shot that was saved by Frank.

Later in the game, junior Xavi Arroyo (Concord, MA) interrupted what was all but a sure goal by Calnan with a sliding tackle at 82:16. WPI had the lone chance of the second overtime and nearly made it count when senior Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) launched a rocket only to have it punched away by Frank.

Hoeckele was tested six times while Frank was called upon four times. In all, Springfield enjoyed a 14-7 advantage in shots and three of the five corner kicks.

WPI hosts Anna Maria Sunday at 1pm and Springfield closes out the regular season Saturday at Wheaton.
