Indianapolis, IN --- The NEWMAC Champion WPI men's soccer team will travel to No. 6 SUNY Oneonta to face the Red Dragons Saturday at 11am in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship. The pod also features University of Rochester (11-3-3) and Conn. College (9-3-4).
The Engineers, ranked No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches regional poll, will be making their fourth appearance in the Division III tournament, and first since 1992. In addition to the other Division III bids in 1976 and 1979, WPI earned berths to the 1970 Division I and 1974 Division II tournament. The Boynton Hillers defeated Westfield State in 1976 via penalty kicks following a 3-3 tie in 1976. Their second round game versus Brandeis is in the record book as the teams totaled a record 11 goals. Three other games also share the honor.
The NEWMAC Tournament and Co-Regular Season champion brings a 13-5-2 record into the national competition. The Crimson and Gray and then-No. 12/14 Springfield played to a scoreless draw in Worcester on October 21, and again in the conference championship game at Springfield on Sunday.
The Red Dragons (15-1-2) defeated Plattsburgh State for the program's 10th SUNYAC crown and seventh consecutive NCAA bid, which features three final four appearances. Rochester, an at-large bid out of the UAA, is competing in its 16th Division III tournament while Conn College, an at-large selection from the NESCAC, is making its second appearance (1995).
