Kansas City, MO --- WPI senior Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) and sophomore Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA) were named to the United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA) NCAA Division III Men's All-New England third team. The pair were previously named NEWMAC All-Conference First Team honorees.
Nemes, also a third teamer a year ago, was second in the NEWMAC with four goals as he notched back-to-back two goal performances at Wheaton and versus Coast Guard. He began the season with a game-winning goal versus Worcester State and another just over a week later at Mass Maritime. Nemes also provided the crucial goal in a regular season matchup with Coast Guard and the lone goal in the semifinal matchup with the Bears. The captain converted the first penalty kick following a scoreless draw with Springfield en route to the team's first NEWMAC Championship.
Beatty was also second with four goals, as well as tied for third with three game-winning goals, and tied for second with nine points during the NEWMAC slate. He provided both goals at Babson and the game-winners at MIT and Wheaton. Beatty also registered a goal versus CCC Champion Endicott.
WPI went 13-5-3 under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Brian Kelley. The Engineers, who captured the program's first NEWMAC tournament championship, edged Coast Guard in the NEWMAC semifinals and, after a second scoreless draw with fellow co-regular season champion Springfield, went on to claim the title via penalty kicks. The Boynton Hillers then traveled to Oneonta, NY for the first round of the NCAA tournament and played to another stalemate; however, the penalty kicks favored the host Red Dragons.
