Kansas City, MO --- The WPI men's soccer program collected the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the second consecutive academic year.
Brian Kelley's 2017-18 lineup tied Caldwell, Central Arkansas, Florida International, Hawaii Pacific, Indiana Tech, Loyola Chicago, Seton Hill, Saint John's and Saint Francis for 79th with a 3.32 GPA. The Boynton Hillers were also fourth in the NEWMAC and seventh among NCAA Division III teams in New England.
A total of 783 collegiate soccer teams (294 men, 489 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Of that total, 198 schools had both their men's and women's programs recognized including WPI.
The team, which set a program record with 11 NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honorees, was led by CoSIDA Academic All-District selections Derrick Naugler (Westford, MA) and Riley Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA). All three seniors that were honored at the conference level, Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY), Ryan Stokes (Fairport, NY) and Naugler, brought home their third accolade. Doherty, Spencer Ralphs (Simsbury, CT) and Jake Steinberg (Shrewsbury, MA) were repeat winners and were joined by fellow junior Frank Ciliberto (Spencerport, NY). Sophomores Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA), Jackson Conroy (Reading, MA), Jivan Purutyan (Concord, MA) and Luke Reiniger (Rowley, MA) picked up their first in their initial season of eligibility.
