Boston, MA --- Junior Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) scored with 46 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the WPI men's soccer team past Emerson, 1-0, for the program's first NEWMAC win of 2018 Saturday at Rotch Field.
Junior Jackson Conroy (Reading, MA) bolted down the wing towards the Emerson goal, shrugged off a challenge and found Calnan with a square ball, who fired near post just past a diving keeper.
The Engineers return to Worcester with a 6-2-2 record overall and 1-0-2 in league play. The Lions, meanwhile, fall to 2-6 and 1-2.
Neither Emerson nor WPI were successful in finding the back of the net as the score was in a scoreless lock at the conclusion of the first half. The Engineers nearly grabbed the 1-0 lead well past the midway point of the stanza when junior Liam Setterlund (Holden, MA) took a bounced ball from 25 yards out that Emerson sophomore netminder David Kemp (London, England) caught just as the ball was dipping to secure the score. In all, WPI outshot the Lions 6-1 in the first 45 minutes of action.
Sophomore Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) came away with two saves while Kemp was tagged with the loss as he stopped nine shots and allowed one goal through 90 minutes.
Emerson senior Paul Bou Aziz (Nice, France) had three shots and one on goal followed by two shots from junior Gavin Faucette (Oakland, CA), who had an opportunity soar just over the crossbar in the 72nd minute
For the game, WPI outshot Emerson, 13-6, while the Lions had the 2-1 corner kick edge.
WPI heads to Wentworth on Tuesday for a 7:00pm meeting. Emerson remains at home Monday to host Eastern Nazarene at 6:00pm.
