Worcester, MA – WPI senior Riley Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) and sophomore Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) have been named to the Google Cloud Men's Soccer Academic All-District I team, as voted upon by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The duo is now under consideration for Academic All-America accolades.
Doherty, a repeat selection, was recently lauded by the NEWMAC as an All-Conference first team selection and three time All-Academic honoree for helping guide the Engineers to a league-leading 0.53 goals against average through the conclusion of the conference tournament. Offensively, the captain and four-year starter netted the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with regular season co-champion Babson and handed out an assist in non-conference victories over UMass Dartmouth, Elmira and Mitchell. Off the pitch, Doherty is a Charles O. Thompson Scholar and Dean's List recipient, and a member of Alpha Tau Omega. His IQP developed a system of trading and investing strategies for the equity market and his MQP is working to optimize placement stability in foster care.
Adams, an All-NEWMAC second teamer and first-time All-Academic selection, went 12-3-3 with seven clean sheets and a pair of shared shutouts in 1,600-plus minutes, including all 690 versus conference opponents. In addition to a double OT stalemate with eventual-NEWMAC champion Springfield, the sophomore stymied Emerson and Clark. He also registered a career-best seven saves versus Endicott in non-conference action. The NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week for October 21 has also garnered Dean's List laurels and is a member of Alpha Tau Omega.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution, must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable) and he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
