Kansas City, MO --- WPI senior back Riley Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) was selected as a United Soccer Coaches All-New England second team honoree. It is the third consecutive year, and fifth time in six years, at least one Engineer has been recognized.
It is the latest accolade for the All-NEWMAC first teamer and repeat CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree who helped guide the Engineers to a league-leading 0.53 goals against average through the conclusion of the conference tournament. Offensively, the captain and four-year starter netted the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with regular season co-champion Babson and handed out an assist in non-conference victories over UMass Dartmouth, Elmira and Mitchell.
For his career, Doherty scored four goals - one game-winner - and doled out three helpers for 11 points, and made 60 starts, in 66 games played. The 2015 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and 2017 All-NEWMAC second teamer was also tabbed as a three-time Academic All-NEWMAC performer in the classroom.
Two NEWMAC student-athletes were named to the first team while Doherty was joined by four others on the second team, and three were named to the third team. Six of the eight teams were represented.
Men's Soccer (12-3-3) achieved 10 or more wins for the second consecutive year, and for the fifth time in six seasons for head coach Brian Kelley. The Engineers began the year 5-0 overall and went unbeaten (4-0-3) in conference play with ties against Babson, MIT, and eventual conference tournament champion Springfield.
