WORCESTER – Senior Jackson Conroy (Reading, MA) scored a goal in each half as WPI opened its men's soccer campaign with a 4-0 victory over visiting Worcester State Friday night at Alumni Stadium.

Senior Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) netted his 10th career goal and freshman Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) deposited his first collegiate marker for the Crimson and Gray while senior Brandon Hima (Oakville, CT) and senior Ben Rickson (West Warren, MA) each chipped in with a pair of assists to go with one from classmate Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA). Junior goalkeeper Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) made four stops in his 13th career victory.

Following a corner kick and a number of touches, Rickson sent a long feed to Calnan at the far post for the header goal at 10:24. Just over 10 minutes later, Conroy finished off a free kick off the boot of Hima at 20:45.

The second half saw Valagussa and Beatty team up to make it 3-0 at 49:21. Conroy closed out the scoring as he buried a feed from Rickson after he received the free kick from Hima in the 74th minute.

In all WPI took 21 shots to the guests seven. Sophomore Ijant Cenolli (Korce, Albania) and senior Alfred Koroma (Millbury, MA) led the way with a pair for the Lancers, including one on-goal apiece. Senior Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, MA) and sophomore Tomas Caneria (Dartmouth, MA) also took aim for Worcester State.  The Engineers were also awarded five of the six corner kicks in the contest.
