Waltham, MA --- WPI's Matt Mulligan (Hebron, CT) and Brandeis' Jared Panson (West Windsor, NJ) traded first half goals as the two teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie Tuesday evening in a non-conference men's soccer match-up played Wednesday evening at Brandeis' Gordon Field.
The draw was WPI's first road result in the series since 2009 and marked the fifth straight overtime contest between the two teams with the Engineers winning 2-1 last season in Worcester. The Crimson and Gray are 2-1-1 overall while Brandeis, ranked 25th in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25, moves to 3-1-1 on the season.
Mulligan put WPI ahead in the sixth minute when he blasted home a feed from Jackson Conroy (Reading, MA) for his first goal of the season and seventh of his career. The Judges got the equalizer midway through the opening half when Pandon's rocket shot to bottom right corner found the back of the net. The sophomore's goal was assisted by Noah Gans (Newton, MA) and Dylan Hennessy (New York, NY).
The guests had the better of the play during the two 10 minute overtime periods, accounting for all 10 of the shots after regulation, including eight in the second session. For the game the Engineers held a 23-12 advantage in shots but Brandeis has a slight 6-4 edge in corner kicks. WPI's Mark Calnan led all players but a large margin with 11 shots on the night.
Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) made three stops in net for WPI while Greg Irwin (Passaic, NJ) recorded seven saves for the Judges.
WPI plays the second match of a six-game road trip on Saturday when its travels to Mass Maritime for a noon contest. Brandeis is also on the road Saturday with a 7pm match at defending national champion Tufts.
