Adams, Defense Deliver as Men’s Soccer Draws With Babson in NEWMAC Opener

Christopher Martenson

Babson Park, MA --- Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) collected four saves and was aided by the backline of Christopher Martenson (Westport, CT), Ben Rickson (West Warren, MA), Mike Biando (Atlanta, GA) and Erik Herrera (San Diego, CA) as WPI men's soccer went on the road and played Babson to 0-0 double overtime draw on Saturday afternoon in the NEWMAC opener for both teams.

WPI, ranked fifth in the most recent United Soccer Coaches New England top 10, moves to 4-1-2 on the season and extends its unbeaten streak to five while Babson is now 3-3-1 overall.

The visiting Engineers outshot the Beavers 16-8 on the day and attempted five of the match's eight corner kicks.

Adams made four stops while posting his fourth shutout of 2019 and tenth of his career.  Babson senior netminder Steven Heintzelman (Middleton, MA.) made six stops for the Beavers.

The best scoring chance for either side in the opening half came in the 36th minute when WPI first-year Franco Bazzini (San Juan, Puerto Rico) sent a low serice just over the crossbar 10 yards from goal. Heintzelman recorded three of his six stops over the final 45 minutes, and then easily handled Matt Mulligan's (Hebron, CT) bid to end the game off a cross from the left flank just 33 seconds into overtime.

Both teams have non-conference match-ups on Tuesday afternoon.  WPI heads to Roger Williams at 7pm while Babson hosts Endicott at 4pm.
