Calnan, Reiniger Net Goals as Men’s Soccer Wins to Grab Top Seed in NEWMAC Tournament

Luke Reiniger

WORCESTER -- Senior Luke Reiniger (Rowley, MA) scored his fourth goal of the season, the eventual winning goal, in the 71st minute to lift visiting WPI over Clark in the final regular season NEWMAC men's soccer game for both teams.

The victory, coupled with Babson's 4-1 victory at Coast Guard, give the Engineers a share of its second NEWMAC regular season in the last three seasons.  The Crimson and Gray, who haven't lost since Sept. 28, improve to 11-2-4 and 5-0-2 in the NEWMAC and will appear in their third-straight NEWMAC Semifinal.  WPI will host the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Clark and fifth-seeded MIT in a semifinal Thursday at 7pm.

On the game's first shot, senior captain Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) put WPI up, 1-0, in the sixth minute with his sixth goal of the season.

Junior keeper Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) improved to 9-2-4 on the season after stopping four of the five shots he faced, including the last shot of the game in the 83rd minute, for the Engineers, while senior Liam Setterlund (Holden, MA) recorded his second assist of the season on the winning goal by Reiniger.

WPI, who is first in the country in goals-allowed in Division, was again smothering defensively.  The Cougars had just one shot in the first half, a header in the 33rd minute.

Freshman Griffin Smith (Austin, TX) scored his first collegiate goal with the assist credited to classmate Ezekiel Palmer (Vegennes, VT) in the 81st minute for Clark, who finishes the regular season 11-6, 4-3 in the NEWMAC.

Junior keeper Melvin Vincent (Rochester, MA), who made five saves for the Cougars, is 8-4 on the season.
