Indianapolis, IN --- The WPI men's soccer team was selected to participate in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship in an announcement made Monday afternoon on NCAA.com.
The Engineers (12-3-4) will face Nazareth (14-2-3) on Saturday at 3:30pm in the first round contest at defending national champion Tufts. The host Jumbos (14-2-2) and SUNY-Maritime (12-9-2) will square off in the pod's other match at 1pm Saturday with the two winners meeting Sunday at 3pm.
WPI, ranked fourth in the most recent United Soccer Coaches New England regional poll, will be making their fifth appearance in the Division III tournament, and second in three years. In addition to the other Division III bids in 1976, 1979, 1992, 2017 and 2019, WPI earned berths to the 1970 Division I and 1974 Division II tournament. The Boynton Hillers defeated Westfield State in 1976 via penalty kicks following a 3-3 tie. Their second round game versus Brandeis is in the record book as the teams totaled a record 11 goals. Three other games also share the honor.
The Crimson and Gray, the NEWMAC co-regular season champion and tournament finalist earned one of 21 Pool C (at-large) bids to the 2019 NCAA Championships. The other three teams selected for the Medford pod were conference tournament champions with Nazareth winning the Empire 8, Tufts taking the NESCAC title and SUNY-Maritime claiming the Skyline crown.
Nazareth, WPI's opponent, is the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history and first since 2006. That was a magical run for the Golden Flyers in 2006 as they advanced through three rounds, including defending Medaille 16-15 on PKs in the second round, en route to the quarterfinals.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
