Medford, MA --- Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) and David Lapointe (Waterbury, VT) netted second half goals as the WPI men's soccer team advanced in the NCAA Division III Championships with a 2-0 shutout of Nazareth (NY) on Saturday afternoon at Tufts.
With the victory, WPI moves to 13-3-4 on the season and will face defending national champion Tufts at 3pm Sunday in the second round. The Golden Flyers, who were making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2006, sees their outstanding season end with a 14-3-3 mark.
The win was the Crimson and Gray second all-time in NCAA Tournament play and first since 1976 when WPI defeated Westfield State 4-3 in a match decided by PKs.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Engineers own a 10-1 advantage in shots, the Crimson and Gray broke the scoreless draw less than three minutes into the second half when Calnan buried a feed by Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) for his team-leading seventh goal of the season and 16th of his career.
WPI received an important insurance marker with under 12 minutes to go when Lapointe collected his sixth goal of his rookie campaign unassisted at 78:12.
Rufus Adams (Duxbury, MA) recorded his 10th shutout of the season as the backline of Christopher Martenson (Westport, CT), Ben Rickson (West Warren, MA), Mike Biando (Atlanta, GA) and Erik Herrera (San Diego, CA) ensured that Nazareth did not log a shot on goal the entire match. Brian Wilkin (Rochester, NY) was solid in net for the Golden Flyers, making eight saves on the day.
Statistically, WPI help a large 25-4 edge in shots, including all 10 on goal, while both teams attempted three corner kicks.
