Babson Park, MA --- The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced its 2008 Softball Academic All-Conference Team on Wednesday. WPI placed three student-athletes on the team this year which ties the Crimson and Gray for the fourth most in the conference. Nicole Maglione, Jennifer Richards and Meg Foley were the WPI student-athletes honored for this year's academic achievement.
Wellesley, MA --- The Wellesley College softball team swept New NEWMAC rival WPI on Saturday afternoon. Wellesley took game one 8-0 in five innings and won game two 11-3 in six innings. The wins clinched the number-one seed for Wellesley in the upcoming NEWMAC playoffs. WPI ends the regular season with a 14-20 overall record and a 3-13 mark in NEWMAC play.
Worcester, MA --- Emily Hiltzik tossed 12 of Smith's 14 shutout innings to help the Pioneers sweep host WPI by scores of 1-0 and 5-0 in NEWMAC softball action on Friday afternoon. With the sweep, Smith (12-18, 5-9) moves into a tie with Coast Guard for the sixth and final spot for next week's NEWMAC Tournament. The Pioneers host Coast Guard in a doubleheader on Saturday.
Worcester, MA --- WPI pitchers Heather Hassett and Lindsay Brown limited visiting Worcester State to just two runs in a non-conference softball doubleheader as the Engineers swept the Lancers by scores of 5-1 and 3-1. With the sweep, WPI snaps a five-game losing streak and improves to 14-16. Worcester State slips to 7-16.
Fitchburg, MA --- Fitchburg State plated a single run in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead that pitcher Bethany Stone helped seal the Falcons' 5-4 victory over visiting WPI in non-conference softball action Monday afternoon at Withington Field at Coolidge Park. The Engineers received a two-run home run from Briana Dougherty but still dropped to 12-16 overall.
Worcester, MA --- Freshman pitcher Sarah Pongratz worked out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Springfield defeated WPI 9-8 in the nightcap of a NEWMAC softball doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon. The visiting Pride took the opener 4-2.

In the nightcap, senior Jodi Moynagh tossed a three-hit shutout to help the Lyons salvage a split.

Amherst, MA --- WPI opened the New England portion of its 2008 schedule with a 3-1 victory over host Amherst on Wednesday afternoon. The Engineers are now 7-4 while the Lord Jeffs slip to 5-6. WPI notched all three of its runs in the third inning. After Nicole Maglione and Briana Dougherty singled with one out, Nicole DeCampo drove in Maglione with a single of her own.
Fort Myers, FL --- The WPI softball team capped off its spring training trip to Florida with a sweep of Eastern and Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday afternoon. In the nightcap, WPI took advantage of an error and three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post its second dramatic come-from-behind victory in as many days.
Cape Coral, FL --- WPI softball dropped a 10-2 decision to St. Mary's (IN) before rebounding with a dramatic 6-5 victory over Rockford in the nightcap of a doubleheader in Florida on Thursday.
In the second game of the day, the Engineers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take an exciting 6-5, come from behind victory, versus Rockford.
Fort Myers, FL --- WPI softball rebounded with two big wins on Tuesday, a nine inning, 9-4 triumph over St. Joseph's (ME) and a 9-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran. Down 3-0 to St. Joe's in the sixth inning, the Engineers came roaring back to score nine runs in four innings. The nine run explosion was highlighted by Meg Foley's grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to take a commanding 9-4 lead.
Cape Coral, MA --- Despite a fourteen hit performance at the plate, the WPI softball team dropped a close 7-6 decision to Dominican University (IL) following an 8-0 loss to St. Mary's (IN). The Engineers would take a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning on a two run single from Briana Dougherty. Dominican came right back in the top of the sixth on a home run and two WPI errors to take a 6-5 lead, and the eventual win.
Fort Myers, FL --- The WPI softball team took advantage of six Rockford (IL) errors and a strong pitching performance from Heather Hassett to tally a 4-2 win to kick off the 2008 campaign. The victory marks the first win for George LeGacy who after eight years as an assistant coach, takes over as head coach for the Engineers. Hassett threw seven innings, scattering seven hits while fanning eight.
Worcester, MA - WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Dana L. Harmon announced today the hiring of George LeGacy as the Head Softball Coach. LeGacy replaces Johanna DiCarlo, who was recently named athletic director at Westboro High School.
