    Former Lyman Memorial High School softball standout Katie Fitton speaks quickly when talking about the project on which she’s currently working. Fitton is a sophomore at WPI, where she’s majoring in mechanical engineering. The project on which she is working is a process to optimize geo-thermal heating systems, using applications of heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Fitton could be the poster-child for the term "student-athlete." Yes, she plays softball for WPI, but where she really shines is the classroom.

  • Softball's Fitton Named Capital One Academic All-District I First-Team

    Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Katherine Fitton was named to the Capital One Academic All-District I Softball team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). WPI is in the college division which is comprised of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA programs located in New England, New York and Eastern Canada.

    Nicole McDonough hit just one home run in an otherwise spectacular senior season at Cardinal Spellman High in Brockton last spring. She certainly turned on the power switch as a freshman at WPI. Hitting out of the leadoff spot for the Engineers, the Abington resident went into the final weekend of the regular season tied for the program record with 10 homers. Then she cleared the fences in each game of a doubleheader vs. Becker, finishing with 12 home runs — a feat that McDonough found hard to believe.

    WPI's softball season ended just short of where the team wanted. But like its star freshman, it's a season that could be a sign of great things to come. After a slow start, Messalonskee High School graduate Juliana Fekete became indispensable for the Engineers. She led WPI in six offensive categories, and the team's 21-18 record marked the second most wins in school history.

    Waltham, MA --- The second game of her college softball career is when the power surge began this spring. WPI freshman Nicole McDonough of Abington hit a pair of home runs in a victory over Rockford College at Cape Coral, Fla., on March 6. That sent McDonough, a Cardinal Spellman High School graduate, on the way to a record-setting season for the Engineers.

    Babson Park, MA --- Three juniors and three sophomores were honored by the NEWMAC as All-Academic team members on Thursday. WPI tied for second with Springfield and both were behind MIT. Representing WPI on the list are Erin Flaherty, Allie Hardy, Allie Roche, Erin Beaulieu, Katherine Fitton, and Emily Hartzell.

    Babson Park, MA --- WPI’s Nicole McDonough has been selected NEWMAC Softball Rookie of the Year following voting at the annual coaches meeting held today at Springfield College. The freshman centerfielder was the only major award winner not from NEWMAC champion Coast Guard as the Bears saw Amanda Frederick (Player of the Year), Hayley Feindel (Pitcher of the Year) and Donna Koczajowski (Coach of the Year) all repeat at recipients.
  • Flaherty's No-Hitter and McDonough's Homers Lift Softball to Sweep of Becker

    Worcester, MA --- Erin Flaherty hurled her first collegiate no-hitter and Nicole McDonough homered in both ends of a doubleheader to propel host WPI to a pair of victories Monday afternoon over Becker in a non-conference softball twinbill. The Engineers won the opener 8-0 behind’s Flaherty’s performance before taking the nightcap 15-2. With the sweep, WPI sees its season come to an end with a 21-18 record. The 21 victories are the second most in school history trailing only the 2006 squad that finished 23-14.

    Baseball's Sam Miraglia and Softball's Juliana Fekete have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Miraglia batted 4-for-4 while knocking in three runs and scoring twice in a win over Becker and Fekete went .500 for the week including a pair of 2-for-4 performances.

    Worcester, MA --- Katherine Fitton’s two-run homer highlighted a five-run uprising in the first inning of WPI’s 7-5 victory over host Worcester State in the opening game of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday evening. The Lancers earned the split as pitcher Michaella Mahoney hurled a one-hit shutout to defeat the Engineers 2-0. WPI is now 19-18 overall while Worcester State, co-leaders of the MASCAC moves to 17-9 on the season.
  • Coscia's Pitching Gem Helps Softball Split at Nichols

    Dudley, MA --- The Nichols College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting WPI Monday afternoon. Nichols edged out the Engineers, 6-5, in the opener before WPI’s Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) earned her first shutout of the season with a two-hit performance in a 10-0 (5 inning) victory. Nichols stands at 18-13 on the year, while WPI moves to 18-17. The Engineers travel to Worcester State on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. non-conference twinbill.

    Softball's Nicole McDonough and Men's Crew's Varsity Eight have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. McDonough batted 9-for-13 in four conference games, including a pair of home runs, nine RBI and nine runs scored. The varsity eight captured the Baker Cup for the fifth straight year and remains perfect in the Class of 2009 Cup.

    Worcester, MA --- Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) batted 5-for-7 on the day, including a pair of home runs, nine RBI and five runs scored, as WPI defeated Smith 12-1 and 13-1 to close out each squad’s NEWMAC softball schedule on Saturday afternoon. With the wins, WPI is back above .500 at 17-16 on the season and finishes to 5-11 in the league. Smith dips to 1-29 overall and 0-16 in the NEWMAC.

    Erin Beaulieu knocked in five runs and Nicole McDonough scored four times to backbone solid pitching from Erin Flaherty as WPI salvaged a doubleheader spilt with host Wheaton in a NEWMAC softball doubleheader played on Friday afternoon. The Engineers took the nightcap 12-1 in five innings after falling 7-0 in the opener. The Crimson and Gray move to 15-16 on the season and 3-11 in NEWMAC action and close conference play on Saturday with a home doubleheader versus Smith. First pitch is slated for noon.
  • Rain Postpones Softball's Doubleheader with Worcester State

    Worcester MA --- Due to Wednesday’s rain, the softball doubleheader between city rivals WPI and host Worcester State has been postponed. A makeup date for the twinbill will be announced either later today or sometime this week. WPI is scheduled to finish its NEWMAC slate this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders. The Engineers head to Norton to take on Wheaton at 3:00pm before hosting Smith on Saturday at noon. The Engineers are currently 14-15 overall and sport a 2-8 ledger in the rugged NEWMAC.

    Worcester, MA --- Wellesley pitchers Lauren Goldfarb and Sarah Scwartzmeyer combined to allow three hits as the visiting Blue shutout WPI 6-0 and 2-0 in a NEWMAC softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Wellesley improves to 16-8 on the season and 6-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers fall to 14-15 overall and 2-10 in the league.

    Worcester, MA ---Amanda Novak went 3-for-4 and launched a 3-run home run in game one and Tess Gagliano batted 2-for-4 with a home run and scored three times in game two as Springfield swept host WPI 5-1 and 9-1 in a NEWMAC softball twinbill on Friday afternoon. The Pride moves to 15-10 on the season and 7-3 in the league, while WPI falls to 14-13 and 2-8 in the NEWMAC.

Clark improves to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference, while WPI slips to 14-11 on the season and 2-6 in the league.

    New London, CT --- Holli Bastinck collected five RBI and Hayley Feindel hurled a pair of shutouts to lift nationally-ranked Coast Guard to sweep of visiting WPI in a NEWMAC softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Bears took the opener 3-0 before claiming a 8-0 six inning victory in the second game. WPI is back in action on Wednesday when they host Clark at 3pm.

    Worcester, MA --- Sarah Johnson launched a three-run homer to break a 3-3 tie in game two to help WPI complete a sweep of visiting Fitchburg State in a non-conference softball doubleheader on a chilly spring Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers took the opener 6-2 before defeating the Falcons 9-3 in the nightcap. WPI improves to 13-7 on the season while Fitchburg slips to 6-7.

    Worcester, MA --- Due to poor field conditions and impending winter weather, Wednesday’s non-conference softball game between host WPI and Amherst has been postponed. The contest has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 30th at 5pm. WPI is slated to be back in action on Friday, March 25th when its hosts Brandeis in a doubleheader beginning at 3pm. The Engineers are 9-5 this spring with a 1-1 mark in NEWMAC action.

The right fielder joins Coast Guard pitcher Hayley Feindel as the conference’s weekly award winners. Martilla posted an eye-popping .615 batting average, while scoring four runs on eight hits and one walk during a 3-1 week for the Engineers.

Martilla had an eye-popping .615 batting average, while scoring four runs on eight hits and one walk this past week for the Engineers.
