• NEWMAC Best Six on Softball Academic All-Conference Team

    Babson Park, MA --- WPI seniors Erin Flaherty, Allie Hardy and Allie Roche all landed the trifecta, earning their third consecutive NEWMAC Softball All-Academic Team honors in an announcement by the conference. With six total players making the All-Academic team, the Crimson and Gray tie conference regular-season champion Springfield for the most in the NEWMAC. Erin Beaulieu made the team for the second straight year, while Janelle MacLaughlin and Juliana Fekete made their first appearances on the team.

    Babson Park, MA --- WPI softball players Erin Flaherty, Lauren DiFelice and Katie Bumila have been named to the NEWMAC All-Conference second team as announced by the league on Monday. The trio of honorees marks the just the third time in school history, and the first time since 1994, that the Engineers received three all-conference selections. WPI had a record-setting season as a team, winning 24 games this spring and qualifying for the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time since 2009.
  • Flaherty Named to Capital One Academic All-District I Softball First-Team

    Worcester, MA --- Senior pitcher Erin Flaherty has been selected as a Division III Capital One Academic All-District honoree by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). Flaherty earned first team honors in District I, which is comprised of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, and advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration. Flaherty’s selection marks the fourth consecutive season that WPI has had an all-district performer for fifth-year head coach George LeGacy.
  • Historic Softball Season Comes to an End With Loss to Coast Guard in NEWMAC Tourney

    Springfield, MA --- WPI softball’s record setting season concluded Saturday with a 4-0 loss in the NEWMAC Tournament to sixth-seeded Coast Guard at Springfield College’s Potter Field. Coast Guard, who later in the day eliminated Wellesley 5-2 in eight innings, is now 22-17 overall while the Engineers fell to 24-16. The 24 wins were the most in WPI softball history.
  • Softball Sent to the NEWMAC Tournament Loser's Bracket After Loss to Wheaton

    Springfield, MA --- Freshman Noelle Christmas belted a three-run home run and sophomore Allison Baker twirled a shutout to help lift fifth-seeded Wheaton to a 6-0 victory over fourth-seeded WPI in a NEWMAC Tournament softball game played on Tuesday afternoon at Springfield College’s Potter Field. WPI (24-15) moves to the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament and will face either Babson or Coast Guard on Saturday at noon back in Springfield.

    Men's Track and Field's Wesley DeChristofaro and Softball's Lauren DiFelice have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. DeChristofaro claimed the long jump and triple jump at Fitchburg State’s Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet. DiFelice had a hit in all four games while batting 7-for-14 including a 3-for-4 outing against Nichols.
  • Softball's Regular Season NEWMAC Title Hopes Extinguished in Sweep at MIT

    Cambridge, MA --- The WPI Softball team entered Saturday with a chance to share the NEWMAC regular season championship but saw those hopes dashed in a sweep at MIT. The host Engineers took game one 4-2 in eight innings before winning the second 1-0. WPI falls to 24-14 overall and 9-7 in league play. They finish the regular season tied for fourth place with Wheaton and will face the Lyons in a first round NEWMAC Tournament game on Tuesday at 2:30pm at top-seeded Springfield.
  • Softball Sets New School Record for Wins in a Season With Sweep of Nichols

    Worcester, MA --- Katie Bumila had a walk-off RBI single in the opener and Lauren DiFelice went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI in the second game to lead WPI to wins of 2-1 and 11-3 over visiting Nichols in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. WPI is now 24-12 on the season while Nichols drops to 12-18 overall. The 24 victories are the most in school history for the Engineers, eclipsing the 23 win mark set in the 2006 season.

    Northampton, MA --- Freshman Katie Bumila collected six hits in eight at-bats, including a pair of home runs to power the WPI Softball team to a sweep at Smith by scores of 12-4 and 5-3. With the wins, WPI secures a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time since 2009. Smith falls to 4-20 overall, and 1-9 in NEWMAC play, while WPI improves to 22-12, and 9-5 in the NEWMAC.

    Worcester, MA --- Ali LaRue had a two-run double and Erin Flaherty tallied nine strikeouts as WPI captured game two 5-2 to split its doubleheader against Wheaton in NEWMAC softball action on Friday. Visiting Wheaton took the opener 3-0. The Engineers exploded in the first inning of the nightcap, pounding out three runs. Nicole McDonough got the scoring started when she hit an RBI single to left-center, scoring Juliana Fekete. Three batters later, LaRue crushed a 2 RBI double to right-center field.

    Worcester, MA --- Lauren DiFelice totaled four RBI and three runs scored and pitchers Allie Hardy and Erin Flaherty combined to yield only two runs as WPI swept visiting Worcester State by scores of 4-2 and 6-0 in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. With the victories, the Engineers move their record to 19-11 on the season while the Lancers, who played in last year’s NCAA Tournament, slip to 7-13.
  • Softball Remains in Thick of NEWMAC Title Race Follow Split at Wellesley

    Wellesley, MA --- Visiting WPI spilt a NEWMAC softball doubleheader with Wellesley on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers took the opener 4-3, while the hosts snagged game two 5-3, courtesy of a Maria LaBouyer's walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. WPI now stands at 17-11 on the season, 6-4 in the NEWMAC. The Crimson and Gray are tied with Babson for third in the league race behind Springfield (6-2) and Wheaton (5-3). Wellesley is 9-13 overall, 4-4 in conference play.

    Springfield, MA --- The WPI softball team fell out of first place of the NEWMAC Friday afternoon after being swept on the road by Springfield 9-1 and 8-3. Sophomore Juliana Fekete launched a homer and Katie Bumila had three hits for the Engineers, who see their overall record slip to 16-10 and 5-3 in NEWMAC action. The Crimson and Gray head to Wellesley Saturday for a noon doubleheader.

    Leicester, MA --- Erin Flaherty pitched a five-inning one-hitter and Christa Coscia struck out 11 as WPI took two games in softball action from host and crosstown rival Becker on Wednesday at Russell Field, winning 8-1 and 14-0 respectively. Becker falls to 4-16 while WPI’s record now stands at 16-8. The Engineers launched four homers on the day including two by Lauren DiFelice and one each from Nicole McDonough and Janelle MacLaughlin.

    Babson Park, MA --- WPI senior Erin Flaherty has been honored as the NEWMAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played through Sunday, April 2nd. Flaherty and Babson senior catcher Nicole Latini, who was honored the NEWMAC Player of the Week, highlight the weekly release from the conference. Flaherty came within an out of a perfect game in WPI’s 7-0 shutout of Clark on Friday. Flaherty also was strong in 4-2 victory over Coast Guard. She allowed just one earned run en route to posting a microscopic 0.44 ERA last week.

    Men's Crew Second Varsity Eight, Softball's Erin Flaherty and Women's Track and Field's Andrea Caprio have all been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Led by coxswain Renee Lanza the octet of Thomas Miller, Frederick Hunter, Nick Van Sciver, Dan Pierson, Michael Mourkas, Burak Birand, Adam Panzica and Paul Kashmanian rowed to a first place finish with a 6:44.6. Flaherty was an out shy of a perfect game and struck out eight of the first 20 batters on Friday. Caprio eclipsed the school record as she tossed the javelin 130-7.25 in her debut for the Engineers.

    Worcester, MA --- Senior Allie Roche went 2-for-5 with five RBI and a pair of doubles to lead host WPI to a sweep of Coast Guard in NEWMAC softball action on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Grey improves to 14-8 on the season and 5-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 14-9 and 2-4. WPI snaps a nine-game losing streak to Coast Guard and notches its first sweep over the Bears since 2007.
  • WPI to Build First “Rooftop Field” in Mass. Atop New Parking Garage

    Worcester Polytechnic Institute is already home to the first green roof in Worcester; now the university plans to open the first “rooftop field” in the city. In May 2012, WPI will officially open its stunning – and sustainable – Sports and Recreation Center. That same month, the university will break ground for a $20 million, 534-car parking garage with rooftop athletic fields for softball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby and a variety of other recreational activities. Approval from the City of Worcester is expected in April, and the new facility is projected to open in January 2013.
  • Flaherty Flirts with Perfection in Softball's Road Split at Clark

    Worcester, MA --- WPI senior hurler Erin Flaherty came within one pitch of tossing a perfect game and her Engineers salvaged a doubleheader split with cross town rival Clark on Friday afternoon in NEWMAC softball action at O’Brien Field. The host Cougars rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the opener, 5-4 and WPI then posted a 7-0 win behind Flaherty in the nightcap. Flaherty, who already has one no-hitter in her career, was dazzling, retiring the first 20 batters she faced, including eight via the strikeout.
  • Softball Swept by Amherst in a Battle of Regionally Ranked Teams

    Amherst, MA --- The Amherst softball team improved to 14-0 on the season, setting the program record for consecutive victories after sweeping a doubleheader with visiting WPI on Wednesday afternoon. Taking the first game of the twinbill, 5-0, the Jeffs earned a thrilling 3-2, walk-off win in the nightcap to set the school record for longest win streak. Theresa Kelley picked up both wins, improving to 8-0 on the year after tallying 20 strikeouts on the afternoon.

Bumila hit a jaw-dropping .619 last week as the Crimson and Gray went 5-1 including a NEWMAC opening sweep of Babson. The junior smacked doubles in the first two games of a three-game series versus NEWMAC rival Springfield and was credited with an RBI during three of his four outings.

    Worcester, MA --- Lauren DiFelice homered in both ends of the doubleheader and Ali LaRue and Katie Bumila combined to total 11 hits and eight RBI as WPI swept visiting Babson by scores of 4-1 and 10-2 Sunday afternoon in the NEWMAC opener for both squads. The Engineers are now 11-5 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The sweep was the first for WPI over the Beavers since April of 2007. WPI is back in action on Wednesday when they head to undefeated Amherst for a 3pm doubleheader.

    Waltham, MA --- The WPI softball team split a pair of contrasting one-run games Friday afternoon, falling to host Brandis in a 2-1 pitcher's duel in the opener before winning in a slugfest, 13-12, after the Engineers scored eight runs in the first inning and were ahead 12-4 in the fifth. In the nightcap, WPI broke out their hitting shoes early, sending 12 hitters to the plate and scoring eight times. WPI opens their NEWMAC season Sunday at noon against Babson.

    Fitchburg, MA --- The WPI softball team opened the New England portion of its 2012 schedule Tuesday afternoon sweeping Fitchburg State. The Engineers took the non-conference road twinbill by scores of 7-3 and 6-2 at Coolidge Park. In the opener, WPI received a solid effort from Lauren Difelice who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI Senior Erin Flaherty was outstanding in game two, tossing a one-hitter while amassing a career-high 13 strikeouts.

    Babson Park, MA --- Christa Coscia and Lauren DiFelice and were named NEWMAC Softball Players of the Week for games through Sunday, March 11th. Coscia picked up Pitcher of the Week accolades, while DiFelice earned Player of the Week honors. Cosica won all three of her starts in Florida, posting a 1.24 ERA along the way while DiFelice paced the Engineers offensively smacking 15 hits in 31 at-bats en route to posting a team-best .484 batting average over the 10 contests.

Trujillo batted .500 as he scored eight runs and seven RBI before capping the week off hurling a four hit shutout against Westfield State. DiFelice collected 15 hits in 31 at-bats as she drove in nine runs and crossed home plate twice for the Engineers.

WPI opened the day with a victory over Northfield (WI) 6-3 before shutting out MCLA 15-0. The Engineers conclude their trip 6-4 and return to action on Tuesday, March 20th with a doubleheader at Fitchburg State.

    Cape Coral, FL -- For the fourth straight time in the tournament, WPI split a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic, getting shutout by Bridgewater State 3-0 before rebounding to beat Newbury 7-3 at the Cape Coral Sports Complex on Thursday. Sophomore Ali LaRue reached base three times, scored twice, and drove in two while sophomore Lauren DiFelice went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Engineer offense to a 7-3 victory over Newbury in game two.
  • Softball Tops Penn State-Behrend, Falls in Extra Innings to Bethany Lutheran

    Fort Myers, FL --- For the third straight day, the WPI softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday morning at the Lee County Complex in Fort Myers, handling Penn State-Behrend, 11-1 in five innings, and falling to Bethany Lutheran (MN), 2-1 in nine innings. WPI will have a scheduled day off on Wednesday and return on Thursday to play Bridgewater State (MA) at 9am and Newbury College at 11am. Both games to played at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
