  • Whitney Goldstein Tabbed as Head Softball Coach at WPI
    June 19, 2013
    Worcester, MA --- WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Dana L. Harmon has announced the hiring of Whitney (Mollica) Goldstein as the head softball coach. Goldstein, who will have additional responsibilities within the department, including teaching physical education classes, replaces the recently-retired George Legacy. Goldstein spent the last three seasons at regional power Amherst College, including serving as the interim head coach during the 2013 campaign.
  • Softball Shares NEWMAC High with Five All-Academic Team Members

    Babson Park, MA --- WPI placed six student-athletes on the NEWMAC Softball All-Academic team, tied with Springfield with the most selections. Senior Erin Beaulieu earned the honor for the third straight year while classmate Janelle MacLaughlin was selected for the second time, and classmate Christa Coscia was selected for the first time. Junior Juliana Fekete was selected for the second time in as many years and sophomore Katie Bumila achieved her first selection.
  • LeGacy Announces Retirement from WPI Softball

    Worcester, MA --- After 13 years with the WPI softball program including the last 6 years as head coach, George LeGacy has announced his retirement. LeGacy won 101 games for WPI, including his 100th just last month in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Smith. He guided the Crimson and Gray to two of their three highest win totals, including a school-best 24-16 mark in 2012.
  • Softball's Postseason Hopes Dashed in Sweep by MIT

    Babson Park, MA --- The WPI softball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday after getting swept by MIT by scores of 2-1 and 8-2. The two wins helped MIT clinch a berth in the NEWMAC Tournament and kept WPI, who needed to win twice themselves, from qualifying for its second straight championships. Senior Erin Beaulieu went 3-3 and Amanda Pierce knocked home WPI’s lone run in the opener and Lauren DiFelice and Nicole McDonough combined for five of the Crimson and Gray’s 10 hits and both RBI in the nightcap.
  • WPI Athletics Announces Schedule Changes for this Weekend

    Worcester, MA --- Due to the on-going situation in and around the Boston-area, the NEWMAC Rowing championships, scheduled for Saturday, April 20, has been postponed. The championship will now be held on Sunday, April 21 on Lake Quinsigamond. The regatta will begin at 10:40am. WPI Men’s Rowing will host its men’s and women’s regatta on Saturday as scheduled and will also be racing on Sunday as originally planned. For Baseball and Softball
  • Softball Cruises Past Smith on Senior Day as

    Worcester, MA --- Senior Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) delivered a three-hitter in the second game of a double header Friday afternoon as WPI swept Smith College 4-3 and 2-1 in NEWMAC action. WPI enjoyed senior day at Marois Field on the campus of Assumption as they improved to 11-21 and 5-9 in conference and provided head coach George LeGacy his 100th career victory in the opener. Smith drops to 8-21 overall and 0-14 in the NEWMAC.
  • Pitching and Clutch Hitting Helps Softball Sweep Fitchburg State
    April 17, 2013
    Fitchburg, MA --- Pitchers Claire Doolin and Christa Coscia combined to allowed just two earned runs and Lauren DiFelice tallied three RBI as WPI swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Fitchburg State on Wednesday afternoon. The Engineers took game one 1-0 before registered a 6-4 victory in the nightcap. The Engineers scored the only run of the opener when Nicole McDonough doubled to left center to open the bottom of the sixth inning and scored two batters later on a Jacquelyne DiTroia double to the right center gap.
  • Late Coast Guard Rally Results in Softball Being Swept

    New London , CT --- Freshman Kristine Kahl worked 10 masterful innings in leading the Coast Guard softball team to a sweep over WPI in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference double header today. Sophomore Jessie Richardson reached the 100-hit plateau with her sixth inning single in the second game as the Bears improved to 16-11 (6-6 NEWMAC) on the season, while WPI fell to 7-21 (3-9 NEWMAC) with the losses.
  • Softball Falls to Brandeis in Twinbill Sweep as DiFelice Notches 100th Career Hit
    April 13, 2013
    Waltham, MA --- Brandeis’s Melissa Nolan recorded four hits on the day including a homer en route to two wins for the Judges in Saturday’s double header. Nolan had two RBI in the first game helping her team to a 3-2 win. She pitched the second game and struck out six batters for a 4-1 finish. Brandeis improves to 19-10 and extended their winning streak to eight on their home field. WPI falls to 7-19.
  • Rain Alters Weekend Baseball and Softball Schedules

    Worcester, MA --- Friday’s rain has forced several changes to the WPI Baseball and Softball schedules. Friday’s softball doubleheader with Coast Guard has been postponed to Sunday beginning at noon. Saturday has seen changes with both sport’s twinbills with Brandeis. The start time of baseball has been shifted from noon to 2pm when the two teams will play two seven-inning games. The softball games, originally scheduled to be played at Clark’s O’Brien Field, will now be played at Brandeis with WPI as the home team. First pitch will remain at noon.
  • Beaulieu and DiFelice Deliver Softball a Dramatic Victory Over Wellesley
    April 11, 2013
    Worcester, MA --- Erin Beaulieu’s eighth inning RBI single provided host WPI a thrilling 3-2 walk off victory over Wellesley Wednesday evening in a NEWMAC softball contest. WPI is now 7-17 on the year and 3-7 in NEWMAC play while the Blue slips to 17-8 overall and 6-3 in conference action. WPI trailed 2-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh and was down to its final out when Lauren DiFelice ripped a 1-1 pitch to left center to chase home Juliana Fekete, who had reached on a 10 pitch walk, with the tying run.
  • Pitchers Excel but Bats Fall Silent as Softball Swept at Worcester State

    Worcester, MA --- The Worcester State University softball team swept a pair of non-conference games from WPI this evening at Rockwood Park. In the opener, sophomore Katie Roy and senior Kylene Pease combined for a five-hitter in a 1-0 triumph before freshman Meghan Rich tossed her first career shutout in a nightcap 5-0 victory. WPI pitchers Christa Coscia and Clair Doolin did not allow an earned run on the day for the guests while McDonough finished the day 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and a walk.
  • McDonough Registers 100th Career Hit as Softball Suffers NEWMAC Sweep by Babson

    Worcester, MA --- Babson's Catie Funk and Caitie Benoit combined for nine hits and eight RBI while Kathleen Conway struck out 16 WPI batters in game one to help lead the Beavers to a sweep of the Engineers on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC action. The Beavers took the twin bill by scores of 5-1 and 11-3. Funk went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Conway pitched a complete game four-hitter with 16 strikeouts as Babson recorded a 5-1 victory over WPI in game one. Nicole McDonough led the WPI offense with two of her team's four hits.
  • Softball Clipped by Springfield in NEWMAC Road Twinbill

    Springfield, MA --- Jen Joseph earned a pair of victories to help power the Springfield College softball team to an important doubleheader sweep of WPI Friday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Pride won the opener, 8-0, in five innings before clipping the Engineers, 3-2. Springfield is now 8-12, but 3-1 in league games, while WPI drops to 6-13, 2-5. The Crimson and Gray host Babson Saturday in a doubleheader at Clark at noon.
  • Softball Succumbs to Wellesley in Opener and Weather Delays in the Nightcap

    Wellesley, MA --- The Wellesley College softball team topped WPI, 6-3, in a NEWMAC clash on Monday afternoon in Wellesley. Due to a lengthy weather delay in game one, game two of the scheduled doubleheader was not started and will be made up on a later date.WPI plated a pair in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 2-2. Nicole McDonough had the big hit in the inning, with her single to center scoring Erin Beaulieu and Chiana Montesi.
  • Doolin's Pitching and Timely Hitting Gives Softball a Split at Wheaton

    Norton, MA --- The WPI softball team split a pair of NEWMAC games against host Wheaton on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field. The Lyons took game one, 9-1 (six innings), but the Engineer came back to take game two by a score of 2-1. Freshman Clare Doolin aided WPI in earning a doubleheader split throwing all seven frames, yielding eight hits, one run (earned), two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Softball Splits With Cross-Town Rival Clark

    Northampton, MA --- Nicole McDonough hit a walk-off homerun in the first game of a double-header to help WPI split against Clark in NEWMAC Friday afternoon at Smith College. WPI stole the first game 5-4 while Clark blanked the Engineers 11-0 in the second game. WPI is now 5-9 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC action. Clark improves to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
  • WPI Athletics Announces Schedule Changes for Friday and Saturday

    Worcester, MA --- Unplayable field conditions throughout Central Mass has necessitated several changes this weekend to the WPI baseball and softball schedules. Friday's softball doubleheader with Clark will now be played at Smith beginning at 3:15pm. The Engineers will head to Wheaton Saturday at noon for a doubleheader as originally scheduled. Baseball has seen changes to both days of its three-game series with Springfield.

    Amherst, MA --- Kelsey Ayers tallied five hits on the day and Carolyn Miller and Brianna Cook homered in the opener as the Amherst softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with WPI Wednesday at Memorial Field. With a 10-4 win in the opener and a 4-2 triumph in the nightcap, the Jeffs improved to 11-3 on the year while the Engineers fell to 4-8. Juliana Fekete and Amanda Pierce slugged home runs for the Crimson and Gray.

    Wellesley, MA --- WPI Juliana Fekete picked up NEWMAC Player of the Week honors as the conference announced its first weekly softball winners on Monday. Fekete paced the WPI offensive attack by notching an impressive .400 batting average on WPI’s recent spring break trip to Fort Myers. The junior catcher walked five times, scored five runs and drove in five more.

    Fort Myers, FL -- Junior Juliana Fekete went 6-for-6 and reached base in all eight plate appearances while knocking in five Engineer teammates to help WPI sweep a pair of games at the Lee County Sports Complex on the final day of its Florida trip. Christa Coscia pitched her first complete game shutout of the season to lead the Crimson and Grey to a 9-0 game one five-inning victory over MCLA and Janelle MacLaughlin posted a walk-off single to give WPI a 6-5 victory over Wartburg in the nightcap.

    Cape Coral, FL – The WPI softball team split its two games on Thursday in Cape Coral, Florida, defeating Penn State Behrend, 1-0, before falling to Kenyon, 4-3, in nine innings. The Engineers are now 2-6 on the season.   • Softball Dealt a Pair of Close Loses in Cape Coral, Florida

    Cape Coral, FL -- The WPI Softball team was edged in two close games on Tuesday afternoon at the Cape Coral Sports Complex, falling to Dominican 7-6 and then 4-1 to Hiram in game two. In game one, WPI tried to rally from a four-run deficit in the seventh inning but fell short, losing 7-6 to the Dominican. The Crimson and Gray got three runs in the third inning to take a brief 3-1 lead. The frame was highlighted by a Lauren DiFelice two-run double and an Erin Beaulieu RBI single.
  • Softball Drops Two at Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday

    Fort Myers, FL -- WPI dropped a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday morning, losing a close 3-2 contest to Northland (WI) before falling 11-3 to Wittenberg (OH) at the Lee County Sports Complex. Northland earned a tight 3-2 victory over WPI in game one thanks to a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning. WPI will change venues on Tuesday and head to the Cape Coral Sports Complex to take on Dominican (IL) at 11am and Hiram (OH) at 1pm.
  • MacLaughlin Keys Softball's Season Opening Split in Florida

    Fort Myers, FL -- The 2013 WPI softball team opened its season by splitting a pair of games at the Lee County Sports Complex on Sunday morning, beating Newbury 5-2 before falling 4-2 to Wilmington, Ohio in game two. Janelle MacLaughlin's two out two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning keyed a four-run rally to help the Crimson and Grey to a season opening 5-2 victory over Newbury. WPI will take on Northland College (WI) at 9 am and Wittenberg (OH) at 11am on Monday morning from the Lee County Sports Complex.
  • Softball Sees Eight Earn NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete Accolades

    Louisville, KY --- Eight WPI softball student-athletes were named All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for the 2011-2012 academic year. The group included seniors Allie Hardy, Erin Flaherty and Allie Roach, juniors Christa Coscia, Erin Beaulieu, and Janelle MacLaughlin, Juliana Fekete and freshman Katie Bumila.
