Fort Myers, FL -- WPI dropped a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday morning, losing a close 3-2 contest to Northland (WI) before falling 11-3 to Wittenberg (OH) at the Lee County Sports Complex.

Northland earned a tight 3-2 victory over WPI in game one thanks to a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Engineers got two runs in the first inning despite registering an RBI. Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) and Juliana Fekete (Belgrade, ME) each singled to start the game and each advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kate Bumila (Raynham, MA). McDonough scored on a failed pick off attempt at third and Fekete would run home on a wild pitch a few batters later for an early 2-0 lead.

Northland (1-0) knotted the game at two in the bottom half on a two-run home run by starter Jayna Loy (Ontario, CA). WPI had chances to take the lead over the last three innings with its best opportunity coming in the seventh as pinch runner Andrea Boxell (Marlboro, MA) tried to score from second off a McDonough single to left but was thrown out at home to end the threat.

The LumberJills loaded the bases in the final inning on a walk, a single, and an error to set up Angelena Koosmann's (Mellen, WI) game-winning sacrifice fly.

Engineer starter Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) was saddled with the loss (0-2) but pitched well as she struck out 11 Northland batters (including five straight) and walked one while allowing five hits and 2 earned runs. McDonough led the WPI offense with three hits and newcomer Jacquelyne DiTroia (Andover, MA) had her first collegiate base hit in fifth inning. Loy recorded the win in the circle for Northland.

Wittenberg scored 10 runs over three innings to propel them to an 11-3 game two win over WPI. The Crimson and Grey managed a run in the first off a Bumila RBI double and two more runs in the fourth thanks to a Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA) run-producing double and an error. Starter Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) saw her record even at 1-1 on the young season.

WPI will change venues on Tuesday and head to the Cape Coral Sports Complex to take on Dominican (IL) at 11am and Hiram (OH) at 1pm.
