Cape Coral, FL -- The WPI Softball team was edged in two close games on Tuesday afternoon at the Cape Coral Sports Complex, falling to Dominican 7-6 and then 4-1 to Hiram in game two.
In game one, WPI tried to rally from a four-run deficit in the seventh inning but fell short, losing 7-6 to the Dominican. The Crimson and Grey got three runs in the third inning to take a brief 3-1 lead. The frame was highlighted by a Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA) two-run double and an Erin Beaulieu (Bethany, CT) RBI single.
The Stars (5-3) would score six unanswered runs to seize a 7-3 lead heading into the seventh. DiFelice (double) and Beaulieu (sacrifice fly) did more damage as they got the Engineers closer at 7-5. Jacquelyne DiTroia (Andover, MA) drove in the sixth run on a RBI single before getting cut down at second base to end the game.
DiFelice and junior Ali LaRue (South Glens Falls, NY) both had two hits to lead the WPI offense while LaRue and Kate Bumila (Raynham, MA) each scored twice. Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) suffered the loss in the circle.
Hiram got single runs over the first two innings while limiting WPI to just five hits as they took game two, 4-1. Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) had two hits for the Engineers as she drove in the only run in the fifth on a RBI single.
The Terriers (5-1) added insurance in the seventh with a solo home run and a run-producing single. Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) struck out four with two walks and three earned runs in the setback.
After a day off, WPI (1-5) will return to the Cape Coral Sports Complex on Thursday morning to face Penn. State-Behrend at 9am and Kenyon (OH) at 11am.
