Cape Coral, FL – The WPI softball team split its two games on Thursday in Cape Coral, Florida, defeating Penn State Behrend, 1-0, before falling to Kenyon, 4-3, in nine innings. The Engineers are now 2-6 on the season.

First against the Lions, freshman right fielder Katie Sullivan (Portsmouth, NH) hit an RBI single to left in the top of the second to score junior shortstop Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA) for the game's only run.

Senior pitcher Christa Coscia (Lakeville, MA) picked up the win, striking out three in four innings. Coscia and freshman relief pitcher Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) combined to allow only four hits in seven shutout innings, with Doolin picking up the save. DeFelice and junior center fielder Nicole McDonough (Abington, MA) accounted for the other two WPI hits.

Facing Kenyon in game two, sophomore right fielder Amanda Pierce (Ware, MA) went two-for-three with two RBI. Pierce drove in two runs in the top of the sixth with her team down 1-0 and with two outs. After Kenyon rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at 2-2 and send it to extra innings, senior designated player Erin Beaulieu (Bethany, CT) had an RBI single to left in the top of the eighth to briefly give the Engineers the lead, only for WPI to watch Kenyon score runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth.  The Beaulieu single was the 100h hit of her career.

DeFelice went two-for-three with a walk while scoring a run. Doolin took the loss, despite going four-and-a-third innings without giving up an earned run.

The Crimson and Gray will wrap up their spring break schedule on Friday in games against MCLA and Wartburg.
