Worcester, MA --- Babson's Catie Funk (Scarborough, ME) and Caitie Benoit (Williamstown, MA) combined for nine hits and eight RBI while Kathleen Conway (Simsbury, CT) struck out 16 WPI batters in game one to help lead the Beavers to a sweep of the Engineers on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC action. The Beavers took the twin bill, which was played at Clark's O-Brien Field, by scores of 5-1 and 11-3.
Funk went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Conway pitched a complete game four-hitter with 16 strikeouts as Babson recorded a 5-1 victory over WPI in game one.
The Beavers (12-8, 4-2 NEWMAC) opened the scoring in the third inning with three runs, highlighted by a Funk two-run double to left center. Emily Morris (Wolcott, CT) would knock home Funk on a RBI double later in the inning. Babson would extend their lead to 5-0 with single runs in the fifth (Benoit single) and sixth (Christa Shorette (Southington, CT) double) frames.
Conway had at least two punch outs in every inning to help earn her seventh win of the season. The Engineers (6-14, 2-6 NEWMAC) broke up Conway's shutout bid in the sixth with a Jacquelyne DiTroia (Andover, MA) RBI single.
Benoit's bases clearing three-run double in Babson's six run fifth inning opened up a close 2-1 contest to a 11-3 victory over the host Engineers in game two.
The Beavers (13-8, 5-2 NEWMAC) got two runs in the first with a Benoit RBI single and an error. WPI would counter with a run in third inning on a run-producing single by Lauren DiFelice (Acushnet, MA) to make it 2-1.
Ashleigh Phelps (West Chester, PA) (single), Shorette (single), and Lindsey Schmid (New Canaan, CT) (double) all contributed RBI after Benoit's big three-run double in Babson's six-run fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-1. The Beavers got three more runs in the sixth, thanks to a wild pitch, a Benoit single and a Phelps' double. The Engineers (6-15, 2-7 NEWMAC) got an Ali LaRue (South Glens Falls, NY) RBI groundout and a wild pitch in the bottom half of the sixth to account for the 11-3 final score.
Christina Miquel (Emerson, NJ) got her second win in the circle for Babson while Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) suffered the loss for WPI.
McDonough rapped out two more hits with her first, a single up the middle in the third, being the 100th of the junior's career.
Both teams return to action with doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9th. Babson will head to Framingham State for a 3:30 first pitch while WPI will travel down Chandler St. to play Worcester State at 4:00pm.
