  • TELEGRAM FEATURE: Softball Coach Whitney Goldstein Recalls 'Pops' — Don Zimmer

    Whitney Goldstein had to throw a baseball off a mound a week ago Saturday, and that felt a little strange to Goldstein. The WPI softball coach was used to underhanding one from a circle in high school before becoming an All-America third baseman at UMass, but she wound up, let it go and paid a perfect tribute to her late grandfather by firing a strike. Goldstein, the granddaughter of former Red Sox manager Don Zimmer, had the privilege of delivering the ceremonial first pitch when the Tampa Bay Rays honored Zimmer before last Saturday's game against the Mariners at Tropicana Field.

    Centerville, MA --- WPI senior softball player Nicole McDonough has been named a 2014 ECAC Division III New England Softball All-Star. The center fielder, who was earlier tabbed a first team All-NEWMAC honoree and a second team NFCA Division III All-New England pick, was selected to the second team by the head coaches within the ECAC Division III New England Softball membership. McDonough wrapped up a standout career that saw her register 168 hits, 24 homers, 121 runs scored and 101 RBI.

    Her softball career at Worcester Polytechnic Institute began with a game on March 6, 2011, against Elms College in Cape Coral, Fla. Nicole McDonough of Abington was in the starting lineup that day as the Engineers’ center fielder and little did she know that game would begin a streak of 157 consecutive starts.The 2010 Cardinal Spellman High School graduate had perfect attendance for WPI, starting every game during a productive four-year career that came to an end in the championship round of the ECAC Division 3 New England tournament earlier this month.
  • McDonough and Gallagher Draw All-New England Softball Honors

    Louisville, KY --- The WPI softball duo of Nicole McDonough and Kristin Gallagher have been chosen for the 2014 NFCA Division III All-New England team. The pair were both named to the second team and gives the Engineers their first selections to the squad since Nicole Maglione was selected in 2007. McDonough concluded a standout career that saw her register 168 hits, 24 homers, 121 runs scored and 101 RBI. She bookended her time at WPI by being named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in 2011 and first team all-conference in 2014.
  • Milestones Galore as Softball Reaches ECAC New England Championship

    Waltham, MA --- The WPI softball team capped an outstanding 2014 season on Sunday, reaching the championship game of ECAC New England Tournament hosted by Brandeis. The Crimson and Gray rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth of the loser’s bracket final to defeat Salve Regina 8-4 before falling in the championship round to NEWMAC rival Smith 6-2. It was a day of milestones for the Engineers. The win over the Seahawks was the 30th for head coach Whitney Goldstein’s club, tying the 2009 baseball team for the most wins in school history by a team sport.
  • Softball Advances to the Final Day of the ECAC Championships

    Waltham, MA --- The WPI softball team split a pair of games Saturday in the four-team double elimination portion of the ECAC New England Championships. The top-seeded Engineers were upset 7-5 in the opener by fourth-seeded Salve Regina before rebounding to defeat the host and second-seeded Judges 7-4 in an elimination game. To capture the title, the Engineers will have to win three games on Sunday at Brandeis. They will start by taking on Salve Regina at 11am with the winner having to knock off tournament-unbeaten Smith twice afterwards.
  • McDonough, Gallagher and Doolin Take Home All NEWMAC Softball Honors

    Boston, MA --- The WPI softball trio of Nicole McDonough, Kristin Gallagher and Clare Doolin have been selected to the All-NEWMAC softball team in voting announced Tuesday by the conference McDonough and Gallagher were named to the conference’s first team while Doolin was tabbed to the second team. The trio of honorees marks the just the fourth time in school history, but second time in three years, that the Engineers received three all-conference selections.
  • Softball Tabbed Top Seed for ECAC New England Championships

    Centerville, MA --- The WPI softball team has earned the top seed for this week’s ECAC New England Championship. The Engineers, who sport a 28-12 record, draw a first round bye and will participate in a weekend double elimination tournament hosted by Brandeis. WPI and Brandeis will be joined on the weekend by winners of Wednesday first round matchups between third-seeded Smith and sixth-seeded Albertus Magnus and fourth-seeded Salve Regina and fifth-seeded Castleton State.
  • Fekete and Bumila Land on CoSIDA Academic All-District I Softball Team

    Worcester, MA --- WPI softball student-athletes Juliana Fekete and Katie Bumila have been selected to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District I team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). The duo earned first team accolades in District I, which is comprised of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration. The Engineers have won a program-best 28 games this spring and are currently sixth in the latest NCAA Division III New England regional rankings.
  • 49 Spring Student-Athletes Honored As NEWMAC All-Academic Standouts

    Boston, MA --- WPI saw 49 student-athletes across five spring sports collect NEWMAC All-Academic honors, as announced by the conference office. WPI had three out their five teams reach double-digit selections led by Men’s Track and Field with 15, followed by Women’s Track and Field with 13 and Baseball with 12. With the 49 selections, WPI ranks second in the 10-member conference behind only MIT, which compiled 52.
  • Gallagher Walk-Off Helps Softball Finish Regular Season with Split

    Worcester, MA --- WPI softball pulled off a comeback 6-5 win in eight innings in the front half a home doubleheader Tuesday against Amherst, but the Engineers couldn’t pull the trick twice, falling 7-3 in the nightcap to suffer the program’s first defeat at Rooftop Field. WPI had won its first 13 games at its new venue. The Crimson and Gray trailed the Lord Jeffs for the first 5-1/2 innings before run-scoring hits by Ali LaRue and Nicole McDonough (2 of 4) evened things at 4-4 to send the game to extra innings.
  • Softball Knocked Out of NEWMAC Tournament After 7-4 Defeat to Smith

    Wellesley, MA --- Sixth-seeded Smith won a slugfest against third-seeded WPI, as the Pioneers posted a 7-4 victory to advance in the NEWMAC Softball Tournament at Wellesley. chance to face top-seeded Wellesley in the NEWMAC title game. WPI (27-11) has now been eliminated from the NEWMAC tournament. Trailing 3-0 early, WPI got two runs back in the bottom of the third inning, stringing together three hits and cutting the lead to 3-2. Singles from Katie Bumila and Kristin Gallagher came around to score on a Juliana Fekete single and a Lauren DiFelice sacrifice fly.
  • Softball Strikes for Five in the Seventh to Stun Babson in NEWMAC Tournament

    Worcester, MA --- After a four plus hour rain delay, a game-winning double from WPI's Kristin Gallagher capped a five-run seventh-inning rally to lead third-seeded WPI over fifth-seeded Babson College, 7-6, on the second day of the 2014 NEWMACsoftball tournament. The game was being hosted at Wellesley.The win advances WPI to play tomorrow at a time to be announced against the winner of the Springfield and Smith match-up. Babson sees its 2014 campaign come to an end with a 17-20 overall record.
  • Softball Opens NEWMAC Tournament by Splitting a Pair of Tight Contests

    Norton, MA – It may have taken extra innings, but WPI softball got it done Friday afternoon in a NEWMAC Championship quarterfinal against Smith, but with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning Kristin Gallagher grounded out to deliver Nicole McDonough home from third, sending the Engineers to a 2-1 walk-off win and continuing one of the best seasons in program history. Unfortunately, the Boynton Hillers’ were sent to the loser's bracket directly afterward against No. 2 seed Wheaton as the host Lyons (30-7) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on to down WPI 3-1.
  • Seventh-Inning Comeback vs. Springfield Sends Softball to School Record 25th Win
    April 21, 2014
    Worcester, MA --- Kristin Gallagher went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and drove in the tying run as WPI scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win over NEWMAC foe Springfield College on Monday. The victory gave the Crimson and Gray a single-season school record 25 wins and helped them improve to 12-0 lifetime at WPI’s Rooftop Field, which is new this year. The Engineers trailed 3-1 entering their final round at the plate, but produced when it mattered, getting three consecutive hits to begin the inning.

    Softball's Clare Doolin and Men's Rowing's Varsity Eight were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Doolin won all three of decisions last week as the Engineers captured five of six contests and secured a NEWMAC Tournament bid while the men's varsity eight defeated Trinity for the first time under 15-year head coach Larry Noble on Saturday and capturing the Baker Cup by knocking off Tufts for the ninth consecutive year on Sunday.
  • Dynamic Doolin Gives Softball Sweep Against NEWMAC Foe Babson

    Worcester, MA --- Clare Doolin snagged both wins as the WPI softball team swept a NEWMAC doubleheader against Babson, 10-4 and 1-0, early Saturday at the Crimson and Gray’s new Rooftop Field where WPI is still undefeated (11-0). Doolin entered the first game in the third inning, down 3-0, and she scattered two hits and one earned run over the final five frames as the Engineers’ bats got hot on Senior Day. Doolin then returned for the nightcap, going the distance in a two-hit shutout. The sophomore faced just 39 batters, or three over the minimum during her combined 12 innings of work.
  • Pitching Takes Center Stage as Softball Splits at MIT

    Cambridge, MA --- WPI pitching did now allow an earned run on the day but had to settle for a road split on Friday with conference rival MIT. Worcester’s Engineers took game one 5-2 before MIT scored two in the bottom of the seventh to take the night cap 2-1. In the first game, WPI scored three of its five runs in the first inning highlighted by a Kristin Gallagher RBI triple and a Lauren DiFelice run-producing double. The other two were scored in the top of the fourth via an Amanda Pierce run-scoring double and a Hope Shevchuk RBI single giving the WPI Engineers a 5-0 edge over the MIT Engineers.
  • Five Homers Propel Softball to Sweep at Brandeis

    Waltham, MA --- Juliana Fekete belted two of WPI’s five home runs as the Engineers’ rapped out 28 hits en route to registering 28 runs in a sweep of host Brandeis in a non-conference softball doubleheader on a cold and windy Wednesday afternoon. The Crimson and Gray took the opener 8-4 before posting a 20-0 shutout in game two.WPI, winners of three straight and eight of its last nine contests, improves to 21-8 while Brandeis slips to 14-12.
  • Softball Scores Early To Grab Nightcap From NEWMAC Rival Wellesley
    April 12, 2014
    Wellesley, MA --- Nicole McDonough and Kristin Gallagher combined to rap out seven hits as the WPI softball team split a NEWMAC doubleheader against host Wellesley on Saturday afternoon. The host Blue shutout the Engineers in game one by a 4-0 score, while WPI rebounded in game two with a 7-2 victory. WPI jumped in front early in game one, scoring a run in the first thanks to a leadoff double from McDonough and an RBI triple by Gallagher and four more runs in the third inning, with three of those runs coming on back-to-back doubles by Ali Larue and Lindsay Gurska.
  • Softball Remains Perfect on Rooftop Field with Sweep of Smith

    Worcester, MA --- The WPI softball team remained undefeated on its new Rooftop Field on Friday afternoon, sweeping Smith in a key NEWMAC doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 15-2. Clare Doolin earned the victory in the circle in both games while freshman Kristin Gallagher blasted a grand slam for her first career home and Nicole McDonough went 4-for-4 at the plate in the nightcap as the Engineers move their record to 18-7 overall and 7-4 in NEWMAC action
  • Doolin, Late Heroics Push Softball to Home Sweep of Worcester State

    Worcester, MA --- WPI rallied from two-run deficits in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to defeat visiting Worcester State 6-5 in the nightcap to complete a sweep of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Engineers, who took the opener 5-0, remain undefeated on its new Rooftop Field (7-0) and is 16-7 overall while Worcester State dips to 5-12 on the season. Clare Doolin pitched up her second win of the day, by not allowing an earned run in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
  • WPI Athletes of the Week #29

    Track and Field's Liz Pellegrini and Softball's Caroline Medino as well as Baseball's Sean Greene were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Pellegrini was a triple winner for WPI at the Engineers Cup as she captured the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15:87 before winning the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:14.56 and medaled for a third time in the 4x400 relay. Medino made history in a non-conference match-up against Becker, twirling the first perfect game in nearly a decade for the Crimson and Gray in a 8-0 six-inning victory against the Hawks while Greene hit a blistering .476 during a 4-1 week for the Engineers.
  • Softball Grabs 4-2 Decision in Game Two to Split Twinbill at Emerson

    Boston, MA --- WPI softball went on the road Saturday and split a NEWMAC doubleheader with host Emerson with identical 4-2 scores. The Lions, who are now 11-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play, took the opener, while WPI, who moves to 14-7 on the year and 5-4 in the NEWMAC captured the nightcap. Tied 2-2 in the fourth inning of game two, WPI pounced with three hits as an RBI single up the middle from Nicole McDonough brought home Amanda Pierce. Another run in the fifth was all that WPI had in them, but all they would need as Ali LaRue brought in Kristin Gallagher.
  • Fantastic Fekete: Catcher Shines in Softball's Road Split at Clark

    Worcester, MA --- Host Clark and crosstown rival WPI spilt a NEWMAC softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at O’Brien Field. The Cougars (6-10, 2-4 NEWMAC) rallied for a dramatic 6-5 win in the opener before the Engineers (13-6, 4-3 NEWMAC) erupted for nine runs in the second en route to a 10-1 victory in the nightcap. In the doubleheader, WPI catcher Juliana Fekete collected four hits in five at-bats, scored three runs and drove in three.
  • Medino and Gurska Make History as Softball Sweeps Becker

    Worcester, MA --- Freshman Caroline Medino twirled a perfect game and battery-mate Lindsay Gurska chipped in with a three-run home run to highlight WPI's sweep of visiting Becker on Wednesday in non-conference softball action. WPI took the opener 8-0 before Medino and Gurska's heroics capped a 9-0 victory in the night cap. It was the first WPI no-hitter since Erin Flaherty turned the trick in April of 2011 and the first perfect game for the Engineers in nearly a decade.
  • Pierce's Perfect Day Sparks Softball to NEWMAC Sweep of Coast Guard

    Worcester, MA --- WPI outfield Amanda Pierce collected hits in all five of her at-bats to go along with four runs scored and a pair of RBI to lift host WPI to an important sweep of Coast Guard in a NEWMAC softball doubleheader on Tuesday evening. The Engineers took the opener 9-4 before taking the nightcap 4-3 in extra innings. Game two featured plenty of drama as both teams were an out away from falling in the seven inning before rallying.

    Track and Field's John deRivera and Softball's Juliana Fekete were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. deRivera burst onto the collegiate track and field scene by winning the javelin at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday while Fekete assured the Engineers a “grand” opening in its initial game on its new Rooftop Field as she belted a tie-breaking grand slam to right center field in WPI’s 9-4 victory over defending champion Springfield.
  • Saturday Softball Versus Coast Guard Postponed
    March 29, 2014
    Worcester, MA --- Due to unplayable field conditions, WPI’s home softball doubleheader on Saturday with Coast Guard has been postponed. A makeup date will be announced shortly. On Friday the Engineers rallied for a 4-0 deficit to defeat Springfield 9-4 in the first game on the new rooftop field. The second game of that doubleheader was postponed due to rain and wet field conditions.
