  • Softball Mourns the Passing of Team IMPACT Teammate Kaylen Gilman

    WORCESTER – The WPI softball team mourns the loss of Kaylen Gilman, their Team IMPACT teammate, who passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016, at UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus, after a hard-fought battle with 22Q11 Deletion Syndrome and CVID.
  • WPI Athletics Announces 2015-16 Award Winners

    Worcester, MA-- The WPI athletic department recently honored all of its 20 varsity teams which encompasses nearly 600 student-athletes at its annual awards banquet. During the festivities, twelve student-athletes were presented with major awards. These accolades highlight some of the best varsity student-athletes at WPI. These awards are presented to student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and in their respective sports.
  • Goldstein Earns Regional Coach of the Year Accolades; Four Softball Student-Athletes Honored

    Danbury, CT --- Softball head coach Whitney Goldstein along with sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA), sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA), senior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) and junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) were recognized by the ECAC for their on-field performance in 2016. Goldstein was named the ECAC Division III Softball Coach of the Year while Murphy-Cook, Biney and Doolin were named All-ECAC first teamers and Gurska headlined the second team.

  • Softball’s Murphy-Cook Promoted to NFCA DIII All-America Second Team

    Salem, VA – WPI sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-America Second Team. The selections were revealed at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship banquet Wednesday evening.
  • Gurska and Biney Named Academic All-America, as Selected by CoSIDA

    WORCESTER – WPI junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) and sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) have been named Academic All-America Division III Softball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gurska becomes the second WPI first teamer in as many years while Biney was voted to the third team. Both were recently named All-New England and All-NEWMAC.
  • Early Blast Dooms Softball in NCAA Division III Super Regional Finale

    WORCESTER – Sophomore Amanda Lee (Saratoga, CA) belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to send MIT to its first-ever NCAA Division III Softball Championship final appearance with a 2-1 victory over host WPI in game two of the best-of-three Worcester Super Regional Saturday at Rooftop Field.
  • Softball Shutout by MIT in NCAA DIII Super Regional Opener

    WORCESTER – Freshman Amber VanHemel’s (Coconut Creek, FL) RBI single in the sixth proved to be the offensive difference and sophomore Katherine Shade (Glencoe, IL) made a game-saving catch in the seventh as MIT took game one of the 2016 NCAA Division III Softball Worcester Super Regional, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Rooftop Field. Senior Alexandra Marshall (Glen Head, NY) tossed a complete-game two-hitter.
  • WPI to Host MIT in All-NEWMAC NCAA Division III Softball Super Regional

    WORCESTER – The nationally-ranked WPI softball team has been selected to host a 2016 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Super Regional on Friday and Saturday. The Engineers will welcome their fellow Engineers from MIT to Rooftop Field for the two-day event.
  • Softball’s Biney and Murphy-Cook Repeat as NFCA All-New England First Team Honorees

    Louisville, KY --- Senior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA), junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA), sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) and sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-New England First Team, as announced Monday. Freshman Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) made the list as a third teamer. All five were previously honored by the NEWMAC with All-Conference nods.

    Medford, MA --- Junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA), the NEWMAC Player of the Year, sent an RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the eighth as No. 22 WPI edged three-time defending champion Tufts, 3-2 (8 inn.), in the 2016 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Medford Regional winners bracket final Saturday at Spicer Field.
  • Softball Survives Scare by Salve Regina in NCAA Opener

    Medford, MA --- Freshman Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) represented the game winning run and sophomore Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) struck out six in relief as nationally-ranked WPI edged Salve Regina, 4-3 (9 inn.), in the 2016 NCAA Division III Softball Medford Regional Friday afternoon at Spicer Field.
  • Gurska and Goldstein Garner NEWMAC Softball Major Awards; Five Named All-NEWMAC

    BOSTON – Junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) and head coach Whitney Goldstein became the first from WPI to be named the NEWMAC Softball Athlete of the Year and NEWMAC Softball Coach of the Year, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches. Gurska was joined on the first team by sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) and senior batterymate Clare Doolin (Newton, MA). Sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) and freshman Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) were named to the second team.
  • BOSTON GLOBE: WPI softball following the lead of Brooks School grad

    One of the two seniors on the highly-ranked softball team at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Andover native Jacquelyne DiTroia has played a major role in the program’s turnaround. The Engineers finished 11-23 her freshman year. The next following season, under the direction of first-year coach Whitney Goldstein, a former standout at Salem (N.H.) High and the University of Massachusetts, the Engineers ripped off a 30-14 mark. The Engineers were 34-11 a year ago, making an appearance in the the NCAA Division 3 tournament. Last weekend, WPI beat Babson (4-0) and MIT (4-1) in the winners’ bracket of the NEWMAC tournament and will carry a 34-6 record into Saturday’s championship game. The Brooks School grad has started all but a handful of games at second base during her career and all but one this season. A biomedical engineering major, she’s one of four WPI captains. Junior catcher Lindsay Gurska of Revere is another.
  • WPI Draws Salve Regina in NCAA Division III Softball Championship Regional Opener at Tufts

    WORCESTER – WPI will head to Tufts for the regional portion of the 2016 NCAA Division III Softball Championship and will face CCC Champion Salve Regina on Friday at a time to be determined.
  • Sophomores, Locals Sensational as Softball Wins NEWMAC Championship, Sets Wins Record

    WORCESTER – Sophomore Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) scattered five hits and struck out a pair in a brilliant eight-inning performance and classmate Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) legged out the game-winning single as WPI walked off, 1-0, with its first NEWMAC softball championship Sunday afternoon at Rooftop Field. Sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Historically, the softball program (35-7) won its first conference crown since defeating Brandeis in for the 1991 NEW 8 title and sets a new school record for wins in a single season by any sport.

    WORCESTER ? Sophomore Amanda Lee (Saratoga, CA) smacked an early two-run blast to help lead second-seeded MIT past top-seeded WPI, 3-1, in the NEWMAC Softball Championship title round Saturday at Rooftop Field. The two teams meet again tomorrow for a winner-take-all title matchup set for 1pm.

    WORCESTER – Juniors Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) and Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ), as well as sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) have been named to the 2016 Academic All-District Softball Team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in District I.

    WORCESTER – Junior Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) drove in what proved to be the game-winning run and senior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) struck out eight as top-seeded WPI defeated second-seeded MIT in the NEWMAC Softball Championship winners bracket final Saturday afternoon at Rooftop field.

    WORCESTER – Sophomores Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) and Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) teamed up to deliver a shutout for top-seeded WPI as the Engineers defeated fourth-seeded Babson, 4-0, in Game 3 of the 2016 NEWMAC Softball Championship tournament Friday afternoon at Rooftop Field.

  • Softball Splits With Babson; Secures Top Seed in NEWMAC Tournament

    WORCESTER – Babson sophomore Ali Reilly (New Canaan, CT) spun a two-hitter in game one and WPI Junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, including the game-winner, in game two as the teams wrapped up the NEWMAC regular season Saturday at Rooftop Field. The Beavers took the opener 8-0 (5 inn.) as the Engineers held on for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

    Cambridge, MA --- WPI softball used strong pitching and a nearly flawless defense to take control of the NEWMAC regular season title chase as the Engineers swept nationally-ranked MIT by scores of 2-0 and 2-1 on Friday afternoon.

    WORCESTER – Junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in a 5-3 win and senior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) spun a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 9-0 (5 inn.) complete-game victory as the WPI softball team closed out its non-conference slate with a sweep of Westfield State Wednesday at Rooftop Field.

    BOSTON – The WPI softball battery of senior pitcher Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) and junior catcher Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) have been named the NEWMAC Pitcher and Co-Player of the Week for their performances the week ending Sunday, April 17. Gurska shares the accolade with senior Tori Jensen (Holliston, MA) from league-leading MIT.

    Worcester, MA --- The WPI softball team swept its third doubleheader in four days Monday at Rooftop Field, beating UMass-Dartmouth, 5-4, and 6-0, hot-hitting leadoff bat Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA), who went 4 for 6 overall. The Engineers won the opening game on a walk-off sacrifice fly by freshman Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH), who drove in fellow first-year Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) on the tag-up to help WPI prevail in a squeaker.
  • Biney, Wood and DiTroia Go Yard as Softball Sweeps Wellesley
    April 16, 2016
    Wellelsey, MA --- Visiting WPI put up eight runs in back-to-back games to sweep Wellesley softball in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers took game one 8-0, in five innings, and game two 8-3. The Engineers improve to 25-5 with their fourth win in a row and their 14th in their last 15 games. WPI is also now 13-1 in the NEWMAC. Wellesley dips back below .500 following today's action, at 12-14 overall and 6-8 in conference.
  • Doolin and Arpin Dandy as Softball Takes Two from Smith
    April 15, 2016
    WORCESTER -- The WPI softball team received a pair of strong pitching performances and timely hitting to sweep a NEWMAC doubleheader against Smith on Friday at Rooftop Field, winning the opener, 4-2, and then coming alive at the plate for a mercy-rule shortened 9-1 victory in six innings in the nightcap.
