WORCESTER -- Junior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) batted 4-for-4 in game one while sophomore Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) did the same in game two as WPI defeated Becker, 9-1 (5 inn.) and 14-0 (5 inn.) Wednesday afternoon on Rooftop Field. Freshman Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) spun a two-hit shutout in the nightcap.
The Engineers (24-10) head into the final weekend of the regular season on a 12-game winning streak while the Hawks move to 12-14 on the year.
Freshman Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) drove in the initial run of the opener before the first out was recorded in the bottom of the first. Junior RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) enabled Graca to score when she hit into a 1-4-3 ground out. The Hawks cut the deficit in half on a two-out RBI single to left by sophomore Megan Klemanchuck (Pawtucket, RI) in the third.
WPI went off for five in the home half of the frame. Graca, sophomore Kylie Juarez (Elk Grove, CA) and senior Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) all singled in a run. Prior to Shevchuk's RBI, classmate Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) sent the ball to the waiting second baseman; however, it was misplayed and rolled to the fence in right field allowing her to come around and score along with Juarez. The Engineers ended the game with a pair in the bottom of the fifth beginning with a Biney knock to center and a double up the middle by LeClaire.
Two of Biney's hit were doubles to go with a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored as Graca batted 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen baes, RBI and runs scored. Junior Katie Chagami (Waipahu, HI) and senior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) each enjoyed a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Junior Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) did not allow an earned run on five hits with three strikeouts in four innings. Senior Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ) fanned two of the three batters she faced in a clean fifth.
Klemanchuck was 2-for-2 with an RBI and junior Samantha Lee (Prospect, CT) helped her cause in the circle with a 2-for-3 day at the dish. Freshman Lauren Niemann (Bay Shore, NY) represented the lone Hawk run.
Arpin, Medino nor Lee issued a walk in the contest.
The Engineers scored in every inning in the second game. LeClaire began with a first pitch single up the middle to plate Biney. Gurska added a 2-RBI single to left for the 3-0 advantage after one. Four more crossed the plate in the second, highlighted by a 2-run double by LeClaire. May promptly followed with a run-producing triple before coming home on a Gurska infield hit.
Shevchuk began a six-run third with an RBI hit up the middle. Junior Julia Veitch (Carlisle, MA) delivered Shevchuk with a single to left. Gallagher then cleared the base paths with a 3-run triple and came home thanks to a sacrifice fly by freshman Leila Camplese (Tewksbury, MA). Veitch chased home Graca with an infield knock for the final run of the game in the fourth.
LeClaire finished with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Biney continued her successful day by going 3-for-4 with a triple, stolen base and three runs scored. Gurska was 2-for-2 with a stolen base and three RBI while Veitch came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Graca (2-for-4) also had a pair of hits to go with a stolen base and two runs scored. Gallagher tripled and walked to drive in three and cross home plate twice. She also swiped a base, as did May and Chagami. Junior Natalie Fabrizio (Hampstead, NH) chipped in with a triple and a run scored. Phillips (9-4) yielded two hits and two walks and struck out two in the five-inning complete game.
Klemanchuck and junior Jennifer Boxell (Marlborough, MA) represented the Hawks in the hit column while sophomore Vasia Murphy (Dracut, MA) and rookie Shannon Lundy (Barnstable, MA) drew the free passes. Sophomore Samantha Belenchia (Ansonia, CT) absorbed the loss in the complete game for Becker.
WPI is slated to wrap up its conference slate this weekend with MIT at home on Friday, in a NEWMAC final and Super Regional rematch, and at Babson on Saturday. Becker is scheduled to host Mitchell and Lesley on Saturday and Sunday.
