WORCESTER -- Freshman Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, FL) did not allow a hit the first time through the order and struck out three with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth as fourth-seeded Babson upset top-seeded WPI, 4-1, Friday evening in the nightcap of a NEWMAC Softball Championship twinbill on Rooftop Field.
The Beavers, who are eighth in the NCAA Regional Rankings, end the day 25-12 as the Engineers, who are fifth on the regional scroll, slip to 27-12. WPI junior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) began to break the ice with a triple to begin the bottom of the fourth. Two batters later, sophomore Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) sent a well-placed hit in shallow left field to chase Biney home. Babson then responded with four in the top of the fifth. Freshman Jacqueline Paul (Burlington, NJ) evened it at 1-1 with an RBI double to right center. The Beavers took the lead on a run-producing single by sophomore Josephine Mares (Houston, TX) and junior Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, NJ) made it a 4-1 game with a two-run double to left.
The Engineers had the bases loaded with zero outs in the bottom of the fifth; however, Stock punched out the top of the order to escape the jam. Stock and the Beaver defense retired the hosts in order in the sixth before each side recorded a hit in the seventh.
In all, Stock (14-5), who shutout the Engineers in game two last weekend, established a new career-best of 14 strikeouts while allowing only one run on four hits and one walk. WPI freshman Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) struck out a pair on the loss while junior Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) fanned one in two scoreless innings of relief.
Mares (walk, RBI, run) and Smith (2 RBI) each went 2-for-3 for Babson as senior Leslie Moore (Atkinson, NH) walked twice. Paul chipped in with a double and freshman Kayla Schinik (Watchung, NJ) stole a base. Schinik, Smith, freshman Annie Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA) and freshman Tori Roche (Andover, MA) were all credited with a sacrifice bunt.

Tango and Reilly Lift Fourth-Seeded Babson Past Fifth-Seeded MIT in NEWMAC Tournament Opener
WORCESTER – Sophomore Ashley Tango's (Reading, MA) sacrifice fly in the bottom first proved to be the offensive difference while junior Ali Reilly (New Canaan, CT) spun a two-hit shutout to lead fourth-seeded Babson to a 1-0 victory over fifth-seeded MIT in the first game of the NEWMAC Championship tournament doubleheader Friday afternoon on WPI's Rooftop Field.
The Beavers, who are eighth in the NCAA Regional Rankings, improve to 24-12 while the Engineers, who are ninth on the same list, slip to 21-10. Babson remains up on the roof for another game against top-seeded WPI. MIT, meanwhile, returns to Rooftop tomorrow for an 11am elimination game.
Each side left six on base including three in the third and three in scoring position by Babson and five in scoring position by MIT. Defensively, The Engineers enjoyed a 1-2-3 second and fourth as the Beavers did the same in the third. Both pitchers went the distance and move to 11-7 on the year. Reilly also struck out six and walked three while MIT sophomore Ravenne Nasser (Methuen, MA) yielded six hits and one walk while striking out a pair.
Sophomore Josephine Mares (Houston, TX) batted 2-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt, a double and a run scored as Tango chipped in with a sacrifice fly. The Beavers ended the fourth and seventh with double plays as senior left fielder Leslie Moore (Atkinson, NH) and junior second base Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, NJ) teamed up on a fly ball that turned into a 7-4 and freshman Annie Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA) snagged a liner and combined with Tango for a 6-5.
Senior Ali Trueworthy (Rochester, NH) and sophomore Erika Anderson (Carlsbad, CA) clubbed leadoff hits in the second and seventh, respectively. Senior Monica Shifflet (Poway, CA) sacrificed herself twice while her twin Natalie Shifflet (Poway, CA) and junior Zoe Hinton (Aurora, CO) were credited with one. Freshman Michelle Wist (Cypress, TX) drew two of the team's three walks while classmate Devon Goetz (Rockville, MD) stole a pair of bases to go with one from senior Helen Rosenthal (Bethesda, MD).
