  • Seven from Softball Cited for Academics by National Fastpitch Coaches Association

    Louisville, KY --- Led by then-senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA), seven members of the 2018 WPI softball team earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athlete honors for achieving a 3.5 GPA or better during the 2017-18 academic year.
  • Biney Named as a NEWMAC Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year Award

    INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Last month the conference announced the six institutional nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. This afternoon the NCAA released the conference honorees and the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) is pleased to announce our selections of Ama Biney of WPI and Zoe Rubinstein of Smith College as our representatives. Selection of the conference honorees are selected by vote of the 11 NEWMAC Athletic Directors. The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors student-athletes based on academics, athletics, service and leadership.

    Westwood, MA --- For the third consecutive year WPI finished second in the Men’s NEWMAC Presidents Cup standings while the women placed third, as announced at the conference's annual meetings by WPI President Laurie Leshin along with NEWMAC President and WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Dana L. Harmon.

    WORCESTER – The WPI athletic department recently honored all of its 20 varsity teams which encompasses over 600 student-athletes at its annual awards banquet. During the festivities, 11 student-athletes were presented with major awards. These accolades highlight some of the best varsity student-athletes at WPI who excel both in the classroom and in their respective sports.
  • Biney Earns Softball's First-Ever First Team All-America Selection

    WORCESTER -- WPI senior Ama Biney became the softball program’s initial first team All-American when she was bestowed the honor by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship banquet Wednesday evening.  It is the third time the Crimson and Gray have an All-American in softball as classmate Nine Murphy Cook was a third team selection in 2015 and picked up second team distinction in 2016.

    Louisville, KY --- WPI seniors Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) and Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-New England first team while three others were also recognized by the region’s head coaches. Biney completed the four-year sweep and Murphy-Cook, who missed half of last season, was lauded for the third time in four years.

    WORCESTER – WPI senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) has once again been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® I Softball Team, as selected by CoSIDA. It is the sixth time Biney has been lauded by the Sports Information Directors in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont and the first under the new title sponsor of the program. The 2016 Academic All-America now advances to the national ballot.

Biney was named as the NEWMAC Athlete of the Year while Gonzales was selected as NEWMAC Rookie of the Year. Senior RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) was the squad's NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship team honoree.

    Cambridge, MA --- Senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) scored her 200th run and classmate senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) moved into a tie for second all-time in Division III with her 173rd stolen base as second-seeded WPI advanced in the 2018 NEWMAC Softball Championship with an 8-3 triumph over fifth-seeded Coast Guard in Game 7 Friday at Briggs Field.

    WORCESTER – Sophomore Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, FL) batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and struck out four in the complete-game victory on the mound and Babson enjoyed a four-run top of the seventh as the third-seeded Beavers defeated second-seeded WPI in Game 4 of the 2018 NEWMAC Softball Championship Wednesday evening on Rooftop Field.

    WORCESTER --  WPI softball closed out the regular season schedule with a split against Bowdoin on Saturday at Rooftop Field as Renee LeClaire went 2 for 3 and drove in four RBI to singlehandedly slug the Engineers to an 8-3 win over the Polar Bears in the opener before they dropped a close 2-1 result in the nightcap.

  • Softball’s Wednesday Twin Bill with Gordon Cancelled; WPI to Host Bowdoin in Saturday DH

    WORCESTER -- Tuesday’s home softball doubleheader with Gordon has been cancelled due to rain.  The games will not be rescheduled as Gordon begins play Friday in the CCC Tournament. WPI has picked up a home doubleheader with Bowdoin on Saturday, April 28th.  First pitch from the Rooftop Field is slated for noon.
  • Softball Drops NEWMAC Doubleheader to MIT; Will be Second Seed in NEWMAC Tourney

    WORCESTER -- With the NEWMAC regular season title on the line, rival MIT twice took early leads on WPI and held on both times as Worcester’s Engineers fell, 6-3 and then 11-2 in a five-inning nightcap on Saturday at Rooftop Field. It was only the second time WPI dropped a doubleheader this year, while they saw a 15-game NEWMAC win streak come to an end.

    Wellesley, MA --- Sophomore Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) batted 2-for-3 in each end of the doubleheader and junior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) was 3-for-4 with a grand slam in the nightcap as WPI swept Wellesley 4-2 and 10-1 (6 inn.) in NEWMAC Softball action Friday.
  • Softball Splits Pair of One-Run Contests With UMass Dartmouth

    WORCESTER – Freshman Kerry Farrell (New City, NY) put UMass Dartmouth ahead with a two-run homer in game one and senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) tied game two with a hit and scored the game-winning run for WPI as the squads split a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday on Rooftop Field. The Corsairs (21-9) took game one 3-2 and the Engineers (24-8) secured game two 7-6.
  • Offense Stays Hot as Softball Sweeps Smith by Identical Scores

    Northampton, MA --- Junior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) batted 3-for-3 with two doubles, a grand slam and seven RBI in the first game and senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) went 3-for-3 with a double in the nightcap as WPI defeated host Smith twice, 11-1 (5 inn.), Saturday in a NEWMAC Softball doubleheader.

    WORCESTER – Junior Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) ended the opener early with a 2-RBI triple and classmate Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) batted 3-for-4 featuring two doubles and what proved to be the game-winning home run in game two as WPI swept Coast Guard, 11-3 (6 inn.) and 8-3, in a NEWMAC Softball doubleheader on Rooftop Field.
  • Martin, Phillips and Kuberka Total 18 Ks in Softball’s Shutouts at Clark

    WORCESTER – Freshman Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) spun a three-hit shutout with one walk and a season-best seven strikeouts in game one and sophomore Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) fanned a season-best eight batters and went 5 1/3 before yielding the lone Clark hit in game two as WPI blanked the Cougars with identical 7-0 scores Thursday in a NEWMAC Softball doubleheader at O’Brien Field. Freshman Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA) struck out three in the final two innings.
  • Biney Reaches Milestone in Softball’s Setbacks to Worcester State

    WORCESTER – Senior Dakota Smith-Porter (Montague, MA) connected on a two-run homer in the top of the seventh of game one and finished the night 5-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored as Worcester State took two from host WPI in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Rooftop Field. WPI senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) legged out a single for her 200th career hit in the top of the seventh in game one.
