Kissimmee, FL --- Sophomore Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) drove in both game-winning runs as WPI defeated Thiel (PA), 7-2, and St. Joseph's (ME), 3-2, in a Monday softball twinbill at the Sunkissed Games.
Trailing the Monks, 2-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth, junior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) doubled in senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) to tie the game before crossing the plate courtesy of a productive ground out by Graca. Freshman Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA) then wrapped up the complete-game win by retiring the side in order.
Biney added a double and a sacrifice fly. Freshman Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA), Biney and Wood each stole a base for the Engineers. Kuberka struck out five and enjoyed four 1-2-3 frames.
WPI collected all the runs it would need in the third inning against Thiel. Biney connected on a 2-RBI triple and was promptly played courtesy of a Graca sacrifice fly.
The Tomcats made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third by capitalizing on a miscue and a sacrifice fly.
The Engineers doubled their total with three in the sixth. Graca scampered home on a wild pitch as WPI narrowly missed an RBI cycle the rest of the way. Senior RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) chased freshman Erika Wentz (Nashua, NH) home with a triple and crossed the dish on a single by senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) to complete the sixth. Wood went yard in the top of the seventh for the 7-2 final.
Murphy-Cook batted 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases, one RBI and a run scored. Both Biney and Wood went 2-for-4 as freshman Skylar O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA) chipped in with a double. Classmate Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) struck out three in four innings of relief and picked up the win. Sophomore Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) began the game and freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) pitched the seventh.
Softball takes on Heidelberg (OH) at 1:30 and Meredith (NC) at 6pm tomorrow.
