Kissimmee, FL --- WPI senior Natalie Fabrizio (Hampstead, NH) delivered the walk-off RBI single as Softball edged Bluffton (OH), 13-12, after the Engineers began the day by topping Westminster (PA), 12-5, Thursday at the Sunkissed Games.
The Engineers improved to 5-3 while Westminster and Bluffton fell to 2-5.
WPI trailed 12-9 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Senior RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) drove in a pair as freshman Skylar O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA) and Fabrizio followed with back-to-back run-producing hits to the outfield to secure the victory.
The Beavers built a 4-0 lead in the top of the first; however, the Crimson and Gray cut the deficit to one in the home half. Senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) began by stealing third and scampering home on a miscue. Junior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) contributed with an RBI fielder's choice and O'Connell drove a run-producing single the left side. Bluffton added one more in the second.
The Engineers evened the game at 5-5 when May scored as a result of a hit by junior Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH). The play also saw freshman Erika Wentz (Nashua, NH) cross the plate courtesy of a miscue. The Beavers then plated three in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
WPI surged closer in the sixth following an RBI double by freshman Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA), a sacrifice fly by Wood and RBI singles by O'Connell and LeClaire.
O'Connell was an eye-popping 4-for-5 with three RBI. May and senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) each batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Gonzales, Fabrizio and LeClaire each accounted for a pair of hits. Biney swiped four bases as Murphy-Cook collected three.
Freshman Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA) picked up the win in relief to improve to 4-1 on the year. Classmate Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) and senior Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) also saw time in the circle.
Gonzales and Wood began the first game with an RBI double and single respectively. Westminster pulled one back in the bottom of the initial frame.
Murphy-Cook launched a two-run blast to center in the second while O'Connell's productive out and a triple by freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) gave the Engineers an 8-1 lead after three. Wood and Fabrizio added RBI knocks in the fourth. A three-run blast then cut into the Engineers advantage.
Gonzales lifted a sac fly to center and another Westminster homer made it 11-5 Engineers heading into the sixth. Wood helped bring Gonzales in for the final run of the opener in the seventh.
Wood batted 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and runs scored. Gonzales, Fabrizio and May all registered two hits and Biney stole two bases. Sophomore Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) began the game before handing the ball to Kuberka, who struck out eight in the win.
The Engineers face Simmons at 1:30 and Ohio Northern at 3:45 tomorrow.
