WORCESTER – Freshman Kerry Farrell (New City, NY) put UMass Dartmouth ahead with a two-run homer in game one and senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) tied game two with a hit and scored the game-winning run for WPI as the squads split a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday on Rooftop Field. The Corsairs (21-9) took game one 3-2 and the Engineers (24-8) secured game two 7-6.
The Corsairs went up 1-0 in the first as senior Emily Colton (Kingston, MA) chased sophomore Nicole McSweeney (Bridgewater, MA) home with a sacrifice fly. WPI evened the game on a squeeze by sophomore Leila Camplese (Tewksbury, MA) in the fourth.
Junior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) smacked a solo home run to center for the 2-1 Engineer lead through five. Ferrell swung the game back to the guests favor with what proved to be the game-winning two-run blast to left.
Crimson and Gray senior Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) struck out five and Corsair senior Hannah Smith (Attleboro, MA) set down four as both went the distance for their respective teams.
WPI stranded 11 runners while UMass Dartmouth totaled six left on base. McSweeney, Colton, freshman Jill Richards (Kingston, MA) and Farrell recorded a pair of hits each to account for all eight of the guest's hits. Junior Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) and sophomore Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) each tripled for the Engineers.
The nightcap saw WPI claim the early 1-0 as senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) scored on a wild pitch. Farrell responded with an RBI double to left center in the top of the second. The Corsairs went ahead in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Cierra Sheerin (Bridgewater, MA). Richards quickly followed with an RBI knock to left center.
Freshman Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) cut the deficit to one with a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth. Three batters later, senior RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) tied the game with a two-out RBI single to left.
UMass Dartmouth took the lead on a two-run homer from Colton in the top of the fifth. Sheerin went yard five pitches later for the 6-3 cushion.
WPI countered with two in the fifth and in the sixth to take the 7-6 lead. Wood sent a 2-RBI hit up the middle before Murphy-Cook singled in a run and scored on a miscue.
Biney was 3-for-4 with a triple and Murphy-Cook batted 2-for-4. LeClaire and Camplese each doubled for the hosts. Freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) picked up the win after tossing 2 2/3 with two hits and zero walks. Sophomore Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) started the game for WPI.
Freshman Leah Major (Fairhaven, MA), Sheerin (home run) and Farrell (triple) all had a pair of hits for the Corsairs.
The Engineers head to Wellesley Friday for a 3pm start and UMass Dartmouth travels to UMass Boston Saturday for a noon first pitch.
