WORCESTER – Sophomore Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, FL) batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and struck out four in the complete-game victory on the mound and Babson enjoyed a four-run top of the seventh as the third-seeded Beavers defeated second-seeded WPI, 7-3, in Game 4 of the 2018 NEWMAC Softball Championship Wednesday evening on Rooftop Field.
The Beavers (26-14), ranked sixth in the NCAA regional rankings, advance to the winners' bracket game Friday at 4pm versus host and top-seed MIT. WPI (27-12), who is fifth in the same rankings, faces fourth-seeded Springfield at noon, also Friday at MIT. The Crimson and Gray need to win back-to-back elimination games in order to reach Saturday's portion of the tournament.
With the game knotted at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, sophomore Victoria Casey (Emerson, NJ) put Babson ahead for good with an RBI fielder's choice. Another run scored on junior Josephine Mares' (Houston, TX) sacrifice bunt. A two-out infield miscue allowed the final two runs to score for the 7-3 final.
Senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) came home on an infield miscue to put the first run on the scoreboard. Babson neutralized the tally when Stock sent a two-out RBI single up the middle in the top of the second.
The bottom of the second featured a leadoff blast by freshman Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) and a two-out RBI single by Biney. With two away in the fourth, senior Samantha Smith (Hillsborough, NJ) cut the Beavers deficit to one with a run-producing hit to shallow right center.
Casey (2-for-4, double, RBI, 2 runs) and Stock later sandwiched a sac bunt by freshman Jamie Hoffman (Manhattan Beach, CA) with hits down the left and right field line, respectively, to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth.
Biney was the lone Engineer with more than one hit, including a two-out double in the home half of the seventh. Senior Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) and freshman Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA) each faced 19 batters in the contest.
