WORCESTER – WPI senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) has once again been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® I Softball Team, as selected by CoSIDA. It is the sixth time Biney has been lauded by the Sports Information Directors in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont and the first under the new title sponsor of the program. The 2016 Academic All-America now advances to the national ballot.
A four time softball All-Conference honoree, Biney earned her third first team nod in 2018 to go with NEWMAC Athlete of the Year honors. The center fielder batted a career-best .446 with 10 doubles, eight triples, four home runs, 17 RBI, 50 runs scored and 35 stolen bases. Having only been caught stealing four times in 113 career attempts, Biney set the NCAA (all divisions) record with 98 consecutive successful stolen bases. Even more impressive, the local product accomplished the feat before being caught for the first time.
Following the conference tournament, Biney ranks first in hits (62), triples, total bases (100) and runs, and is second in stolen bases, batting average, on base percentage (.515) and slugging percentage (.719). Biney enjoyed a 10-game hitting streak (April 7 – April 14) including three games with two or more. Overall, the senior totaled 17 multi-hit games featuring seven conference regular season matchups.
Academically, the mechanical engineering major's IQP involved developing QuizASSIST, a phone application that allows students to access content from their courses to study, learn, and challenge others and MQP consisted of consulting with firms in the Greater Boston Area to collect market data on how CEOs and CFOs value projects. In the community, Biney is involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters, Relay for Life, Special Olympics and Team IMPACT, as well as Girls Inc.
