Westwood, MA --- WPI junior Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) and freshman Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) were recognized as the NEWMAC Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. It is the second time the Engineers have swept the awards this season as the duo joins Caraline Wood and Katie Martin who were lauded on March 11.
Phillips was the winning pitcher in three of the Engineers four games, and did not allow a walk in 16 innings, last week. After striking out seven in game one at Amherst, the junior struck out four in the first six innings of the day at Wheaton. Phillips then returned to the circle and added three more strikeouts in the final three innings versus the Lyons.
Ambrosino batted .467 with two home runs, five RBI and four runs scored in a 3-1 week. On Saturday versus Wheaton, the rookie was 2-for-4 in each game and accounted for the first and last run of the day in the form of home runs, the latter a three-run game-winning swing in the top of the seventh. Earlier in the week, Ambrosino was 2-for-4 with an early game-tying RBI in the game one victory at Amherst.
Softball (12-6, 4-0) heads back to Western Mass. Tuesday for a 3pm NEWMAC set at Springfield (8-6, 2-0).
